Marker's film, an astonishingly powerful experiment with word and image, is made from a series of stills and a voice-over narration that tells of experiments carried out on a prisoner in the underground camps to which everyone has been forced after the holocaust of World War III.

The film's opening, an image of the New Zealand flag and the sound of the national anthem, followed by a portrait of the youthful Queen Elizabeth II (recalling the opening of Bad Taste), makes the connection between the mother country and the terrible mother in the story.
This scene, as Helen Martin notes, is part of a larger motif of birth imagery in the film that includes shots of uterine passageways in the house and the scene of Lionel hanging from the ceiling lamp cord while pursued by crawling intestines (6).
Jackson had a bigger budget and better resources than ever before when he returned to Braindead after a delay of over two years, and it shows: the film has even more blood, guts and generally gross imagery than Jackson's previous two productions.

 Review : Braindead
It is definitely not a film for everyone - fans of the hard-stuff should really enjoy it, but if your girlfriend doesn't particularly like gore and you've just eaten something "rich and creamy", I'd probably give it a miss.
But any horror fan worth his weight in fake-blood would have already had that name burned into their film-viewing consciouness for his 1992 schock-comedy, Braindead.
Braindead is a true masterpiece - the combination of extreme visuals and cheesy tongue-in-cheek comedy is very rare to have in such concentrated amounts.

But Robbins says something far more universal with this film; democracies are not safe from tyranny or fascism; all it takes is a charismatic reactionary who can manipulate the interests of the press and the political interests to rise to power by appealing to the worst elements of our psyche, for entertainment, glamour, and exclusionism.
Let's make one thing clear: This film is a satire, not a commentary; in my opinion it's not about Republicans or Democrats, or conservatives or liberals; it is about the nature of democracies.
Tim Robbins has a winner here, and this film gets overlooked because it gets dragged into these conversations about Robbins' own political views, and whether the film is making a statement about Republicans or Democrats.
