 The Memphis Jug Band
Yazoo have certainly done the job well; there is a preponderance of Victor material, with only two titles from 1934, when the band went to OKeh, and radically reinvented itself, stressing manically extrovert breakdowns, with the fiddle of Charlie Pierce strongly featured.
Yazoo’s collection is a very good one; my only complaint is that the cover photograph has been ineptly colorised, and thereby robbed of its historical context, and its artistic and iconic power.
They cleverly updated the old song, with references to band member Benny Ramey, and to the political corruption that made Memphis a wide-open town in the days of Prohibition.

Great Ears - Trendlines - CIO Magazine May 1,2001
Yazoo Records, a division of New York City-based Shanachie Entertainment, just added a 23-song Best of Blind Lemon Jefferson CD to an already extensive collection of remastered prewar blues.
A modern recording session it wasn't—Jefferson didn't even use a microphone for many of the songs—and little thought was given to the sound quality.
Yazoo has rightfully gained a reputation among music aficionados for getting the best possible sound from 1920s acetate 78s.

Anyway, with their vocal harmonies and diverse song selection, Blue Yazoo displays obvious musical talent and know-how.
Maybe the mixing on the DIY CD is the problem, or maybe Blue Yazoo is just ahead of its time, but the impression I get is that the CD lacks consistency and feels a little rigid overall.
Often, these bands are grunge rock or heavy metal outfits without much of a future.

 Basement Tapes Liner Notes
A good number of the songs seem as cryptic, or as nonsensical, as a misnumbered crossword puzzle-that is, if you listen only for words, and not for what the singing and the music say -- but the open spirit of the songs is as straightforward as their unmatched vitality and spunk.
An ensemble comes together--the Band forms--as you listen, with the picture of a string band chasing a full moon out from behind the clouds framed by Eric Clapton's electric guitar, the song ending a movie you've seen all your life, and have never seen at all.
As Dylan and The Band trade vocals across these discs, as they trade nuances and phrases within the songs, you can feel the warmth and the comradeship that must have been liberating for all six men.

RollingStone.com: Ten Years In The Making Vol. 3 : Review
His two-part "Prayer of Death" on Yazoo 1022 includes several traditional hymns (the religious folks didn't sing blues, but blues singers often sang religious songs), but there are also sections where Patton alternates half-sung preaching with arrhythmic interjections from his guitar, a pattern which many African griots still employ.
As recordings spread they bred standardization, so that the "second generation" of recorded bluesmen for the most part abandoned such "irregularities" in favor of Western song forms and the codified 12-bar blues structure.
In fact, MacIntorsh's guitar (also represented on Yazoo 1022) is as reminiscent of the halam of the Wolof minstrels of Senegal as it is of the early white Pentecostal guitarists.

Yazoo is hardly the only label to have pointed the way to such original source material, but its detailed liner notes and high mastering standards place the label a cut above the rest.
In addition to compiling definitive statements of the finest bluesmen of the 1920s and 1930s, Shanachie-owned Yazoo Records has assembled some wonderful themed compilations from the period as well.
While "Spoonful" is probably the most commonly rendered blues standard on the collection, there's nothing quite like Charlie Patton's take, recorded by the guitarist in the late '20s for Paramount.

This compilation by Yazoo Records includes every song Philips ever recorded, and all were laid down between 1927 and 1929.
While the dolceola, with its shimmering sound, gives these historic recordings a surreal sound, it is nevertheless Philips' voice that most grabs your attention.
A cross between a piano and a zither, a dolceola was manufactured in Toledo, Ohio, at the turn of the 20th Century.

These tracks have the usual charm of old-timey field recordings: plain folks plunking out the tunes they grew up with and love, the occasional unmoderated laughter, the audible twinkle in their eyes as they sing a silly love song or a spooky ghost story.
Oddball record collecting mystic-savant Harry Smith was one of the first eggheady bohemian types to take stock of the vast ocean of hauntingly evocative, genuinely odd, music recorded by rural blues and country artists during the Great Depression.

After the release of Speak & Spell, their first album, song-writer Clarke left the band and went on to form Yazoo( Yaz in the US) with Alison Moyet, The Assembly with Feargal Sharkey, Dave Clempson and Eric Radcliffe, and later Erasure with Andy Bell.
After the release of A Broken Frame in 1982, Alan Wilder joined the band as a permanent replacement for Clarke and Martin Gore took over as the band's primary song-writer.
In the early 1980s the band's popularity was largely confined to Europe (particularly Germany) and their style was Synth pop.

Tommy Johnson was alleged to have done it, and his brother Mager did a version of it.

Baltimore City Paper: MUSIC A Seven-CD Set Fleshes Out the Charley Patton Story
The best single-CD anthology of Patton's music is still the venerable 24-song collection Founder of the Delta Blues; if that title is a bit far-fetched, the title of the companion volume, King of the Delta Blues (both available on Yazoo Records), is not.
It was Patton's traveling partner, Son House, who put more emphasis on storytelling and melody and thus created the folk-song tradition in the blues.
Charley Patton didn't invent Mississippi blues, but he was probably alive when it was created and he was by all accounts the music's first regional star.
