I was lucky to get placed in Ono, a small town in the east of Fukui, completely encircled by a 360 degree ring of mountains that had eight ski areas within a 45 minute drive.
Fukui was comprised of several small, yet fun ski grounds that were never busy.
Although Fukui’s tallest mountain was around just 1600m and most ski areas had short runs and some just a couple of lifts, there was plenty of snow, and the sheer number of different ski grounds offered much variety and kept us entertained all season.

Our little prefecture of Fukui, famous for nothing, and largely unknown to the majority of Japanese has not only made national, but international headlines after receiving record breaking volumes of snow.
Part of the reason Fukui has made world news is because of the number of deaths the snow has caused.
A train was derailed after hitting a snow drift, car accidents have quadrupled, people have been killed falling from their roofs whilst shovelling snow, and entire buildings have been crushed by the weight of snow.

It seemed the snow storm had persuaded everybody else to stay at home, and every ounce of that thigh deep Fukui powder was mine.
Though his English and my stumbling Japanese often made communication basic at times, with fellow snowboarder and talented Japanese speaker Brandon Wright onboard, we laughed and joked, as Yasu led us deep into the backcountry of the Okuetsu mountains, up tree studded slopes, and down steep snowy chutes.
It’s a shame, but it had to be done – several houses collapsed under the weight of snow this year.

Well, I’ll start by saying it’s been the best two years of my life so far, and I have got a tremendous amount of pleasure and satisfaction from living here, meeting the locals, learning a little lingo, and enjoying a life where everyday is an adventure into the unknown.
By bike, snowboard, cross-country ski, kayak, snowshoe, car and foot, I have explored deep into the natural wonders of Fukui, perhaps delving deeper than many of the locals.
So, thanks Ono, thanks Fukui and thanks Japan for giving me an incredible two years, which have changed my life, given me new direction and allowed me to meet so many beautiful people.
