Fukuoka was formerly the residence of the powerful daimyo of Chikuzen, and played a conspicuous part in the medieval history of Japan; the renowned temple of Ieyasu in the district was destroyed by fire during the Boshin war of 1868.

Hiroyuki Kitamura, 29, a reporter at RKB Mainichi Broadcasting Corp. and a resident of the city of Fukuoka, was arrested Sunday along with Toshio Tashima, 39, a gas station employee residing in Onojo, Fukuoka Prefecture.
Kitamura and Tashima are suspected of raping a 17 year-old girl from Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, whom they came to know through a mobile phone dating service, after bringing her by car from JR Fukuoka Station to a hotel in Onojo on Nov. 15.
