Topic: Onopordum

  Onopordum genus
Survival is encouraged by overgrazing in grasslands and by low intensity burning of fields that often stimulates a flush of seed germination from the upper soil seed bank.
Onopordum thistles are distinguishable from other genera of thistles with spiny stern-wings and/or leaves by having receptacles that lack bristly chaff and have deep pits surrounded by membranous extensions.

 DPIW - Onopordum Thistles WMP
Onopordum thistles are spiny, erect herbs that may grow to 2 m high.
These include practising integrated Onopordum thistle control in pastures or crops likely to be harvested for sale or distribution, careful inspection of the product prior to sale or distribution and forgoing the sale and distribution of produce grown in areas where Onopordum thistle control has not been undertaken successfully.
Persons wishing to transport Onopordum thistles or any thing contaminated with Onopordum thistles, for the purpose of disposal, should ensure this is undertaken in a manner that does not permit the release of seeds or other material.

Benefits from biological control of Onopordum thistles (Fact Sheet)   (Site not responding. Last check: )
For Onopordum thistles, a suite of agents that attack different parts or growth stages of the plant have been released.
The summer generation has the greatest impact on the Onopordum population as development of the larvae is rapid and the perenniating rosettes cannot compensate with a comparable growth rate.
The impact of this fly complements the feeding behaviour of the crown weevil by extending the period of attack by biological control agents.

Several European thistles of the genus Onopordum have become naturalized in Australia where they have become serious pasture weeds, leading to a project aimed at their biological control.
This study describes a series of field cage experiments conducted in Spain to measure the impact of the rosette crown weevil Trichosirocalus briese on Onopordum growth and reproduction, and to determine whether this justified its release in Australia for biological control purposes.
Field data suggested that Onopordum plants in dense patches were attacked less frequently by weevils and that larger thistle rosettes were preferred for egg-laying.

Biological control of Onopordum thistles in South-East Australia (Fact Sheet)
CSIRO research on the biological control of Onopordum thistles is leading to the return of many pastures to greater productivity.
The Onopordum thistles thrive in high fertility soils, such as improved pastures, and dense stands have established across millions of hectares, smothering desirable vegetation with their rosette leaves.
Infested thistle heads are collected prior to adult emergence and moved to suitable 'nursery' sites that are likely to remain undisturbed for an extended period (for example, three to four years).

Adults emerge from estivation in September and are active, mate and lay eggs at the base of the main leef vein of the Onopordum rosettes through the winter.
Two adults spring generations lay eggs on the leaf of the Onopordum rosette. The larvea join the bud, eat the colar and destroy a part of the root, then leave the plant for pupating on dry leaf or on the soil.
