Freedom Party of Ontario - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Freedom Party of Ontario is a provincial political party in Ontario, Canada that was founded on 1 January 1984 by Robert Metz and Marc Emery - then of London, Ontario - as a successor to the Unparty.
Sometimes labelled as "libertarian", the Freedom Party actually opposes libertarianism's tolerance for anarchism, and instead espouses political "freedom", in the sense that term is used by objectivists.
The Freedom Party of Ontario's growth was hindered during the years of the Progressive Conservative government of Mike Harris (1994 through 2002): many who might otherwise have supported the Freedom Party believed that Harris' Progressive Conservative Party would be more likely to win seats at that point in time.

Libertarian Party of Canada - What is Libertarianism?
Libertarianism challenges the basic premise behind this trend - this view that what the state perceives as "the common good" should be forced on the individual - and it challenges the idea on two fronts.
Libertarians believe the reason this has happened is not because ideals always conflict with practical reality, but because the ideal of socialism (as enforced by the state) is an ugly one, not suited to Free men.
Marilee Haylock (1942-1982) was Chairman of the Ontario Libertarian Party from 1976 to 1979.

The party declined when the Reform Party of Canada was formed, which attracted many libertarians who saw it as a better vehicle to put forward their philosophy.
Many libertarians were also attracted to provincial Progressive Conservative parties that moved to the right during the 1990s in Ontario under Mike Harris, and in Alberta under Ralph Klein.
The decline in the party's membership and resources resulted in Elections Canada removing their status as a registered party immediately before the 1997 federal election when the Libertarians failed to run the minimum fifty candidates needed to maintain their registration.

Freedom Party International - Public Address - The Future of Rent Control in Ontario
Ontario is rapidly becoming a state-controlled society, and Ontarians, like most who have fallen victim to the effects of state imposed restrictions, are becoming politically impotent in their ability to reverse the trend.
As a political party believing that the foundation of personal liberty and choice is the concept of private property and the right to fully exercise ownership of such property, we have no choice but to condemn rent controls on both practical and moral grounds.
I realize that many people may be reluctant to support a new political party because they perceive that it has a much longer way to go before it can share the degree of influence shared by the parties in power.
