In 1975, five-second runs were still a rarity in NHRA competition, but the high-traction surface of Ontario Motor Speedway produced more than two dozen fives during the weekend, including the sport's first all-five-second Top Fuel field.
There were even eight alternates for the 16-car field that ran in the fives, but all of them were overshadowed by Garlits, who made what is arguably the greatest single run in the history of the sport when he drove his fl Swamp Rat entry to a 5.63, 250.69.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway, located in Speedway, Indiana (a separate town completely surrounded by Indianapolis) in the United States, is the second-oldest surviving automobile racing track in the world (after the Milwaukee Mile), having existed since 1909, and the original "Speedway," the first racing facility historically to incorporate the word.
Ironically, a wave of F1 drivers went to the Speedway in the 1960s, and the rear-engine revolution that was started in F1 by the Cooper team changed the face of the 500 as well; since Jim Clark's win in 1965, every winner has driven a rear-engined car.

Designed by Walter Ted Tyler, it was a 2.5-mile rectangular oval with an enormous infield road course and a pitroad wider than many tracks' straightaways to accomodate NHRA dragsters; there were luxury suites within the mammoth grandstand tower at the start/finish line and two lakes in the infield.
The lesson of Ontario remains the folly of pushing racing on demographics that don't work for it.
As splendid a speedway as Ontario was - and being a 2.5-mile rectangle it was more attractive than the 2-mile oval of Fontana or the varied D-oval short tracks and milers that have dotted the landscape in the last 20 years - it died because it was in a market that could not sustain it.
