  Ontario Public Service Employees' Union Pension Act, 1994, S.O. 1994, c. 17, Sched.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
  The purpose of this Act is to authorize the establishment of the Ontario Public Service Employees' Union Pension Plan and to provide for a temporary reduction in certain payments made by employers and employees to the Public Service Pension Fund and the Ontario Public Service Employees' Union Pension Fund.
(3) The OPSEU Plan shall be established in accordance with this Act and the Sponsorship Agreement between the Crown and OPSEU dated April 18, 1994 and tabled in the Legislative Assembly as a sessional document.
  (1) The Ontario Public Service Pension Board has by this Act the authority to comply and shall comply with the terms of the Sponsorship Agreement and shall perform the duties and may exercise the powers imposed or conferred on it by the Agreement.

These public services were a direct responsibility of the provincial government until they downloaded to municipalities and/or contacted or sold out to the private sector labs.
OPSEU has made opposition to this and all privatisation of public services a key feature of their strike demands.
In 1995, the Ontario NDP was booted from power, falling to third party status, after having betrayed labour, cut social programmes and put provincial public services on the road to privatisation.

The National Union of Public and General Employees has expressed condolences to the family of Louise Pargeter, a parole officer who was murdered in the Yellowknife apartment of a parolee she was visiting in the course of her duties.
Ontario correctional officers are expecting a "summer of chaos" caused by unfair and discriminatory treatment of so-called "unclassified officers." The Ontario Public Service Employees Union is calling for action by the province.
The Ontario Public Service Employees Union, which represents workers at the Syl Apps Youth Centre, says Kinark Child and Family Services is refusing to bargain a new collective agreement, setting the stage for a potential lockout by April 15.

Per Dickson C.J.: The Public Service Act is directed to the general regulation of the hiring, dismissal, and terms and conditions of employment in the public service and in essence governs the establishment, functions, responsibilities and employment relationships of the Ontario Public Service.
The duty is the one imposed upon the members of the public service to abstain from the political activities contemplated by the impugned provisions.

OPSEU picket lines have already been strengthened by members of the teachers' unions, the Canadian Autoworkers Union, the United Steelworkers of America, the Canadian Union of Public Employees, and the Public Service Alliance of Canada.
As a result, OPSEU members will no longer have the right to keep jobs that are privatized by the government, and those that do are guaranteed neither union protection nor their previous wage rate.
The union's negotiating position is to accept the layoffs but demand more severance pay for those who lose their jobs and reinstitute successor rights for those whose jobs are privatized.

 CBC News: Ontario strikes deal with public service union
The Ontario Public Service Employees Union and the province have made a tentative four-year deal.
The union said the new deal is much better than one offered by the province last month that was rejected by OPSEU members.
OPSEU represents about 42,000 government employees who work in a variety of positions, including nurses, meat and water inspectors, forest firefighters, administrative support staff and correctional officers.

Provision of quality daycare is an investment in the future of communities and must be an integral part of the children's services and education available to all children in Ontario.
It is important for us to recognize the priority for newcomers to Ontario, whether they be from other provinces or other countries, and their special needs and the barriers they face when they come to the province.

We expected that our OPSEU employees would act as professionals and ensure that patient needs were met on Feb. 13 and unfortunately a number of them chose not to do that," said Jennifer Shea, director of communication and education at the Quinte Healthcare Corporation.
The union members are a little disappointed with the outcome, but feel the walk was worth it.

The Ontario Court of Appeal held that the use of Lavigne's (and other workers) union dues by OPSEU was a private activity carried on by a private organization (OPSEU) and was therefore beyond the reach of the Charter.
Lavigne argued that he would accept the obligatory payment of union dues, if his dues were only used for collective bargaining purposes, that is, the negotiation and administration of the collective agreement at his workplace.
He found that Lavigne's contribution to the union, in the form of union dues, cannot be said to be an attempt to convey meaning.

OPSEU claims the cuts will put more pressure on the health care system, the education system, and the justice system, "all of which are more expensive and less appropriate ways of dealing with children in crisis." It will also put pressure on the children's aid system.

 Community Action: Psychiatric workers get 5.5% rise
BROCKVILLE -- Office, service and clerical employees of the Psychiatric Site of the Royal Ottawa Hospital will receive increases of about 5.5 per cent over three years, as a result of an arbitration ruling.
