The Ontario Veterinary College is the oldest veterinary school in Canada and the United States.
OVC is the only veterinary college in the province of Ontario, and one of only four veterinary colleges across Canada.
OVC offers bachelor's degrees in bio-medical science, but its primary degree offering is the DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine).

Family, friends and classmates (OVC' 81) have endowed an award which yields approximately $500 for graduate students pursuing research in large animals and who are enrolled in a department of the Ontario Veterinary College.

Across the border, in the older states, veterinary organization was still in its fledgling stages, and in Great Britain, Queen Victoria had approved of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons only 35 years earlier.
Settlers required growing veterinary attention for their livestock and by the 1860's, the advent of travel by steamship and railway stimulated a greater need for better animal care as livestock became more vulnerable to European diseases.
In 1871, the veterinary profession reached another milestone when the Agriculture and Arts Act of Ontario was amended to provide that no one should append their name to the title of veterinary surgeon unless certified by a veterinary college.

It is a tragic commentary that scours continues to be the greatest single cause of death of calves in the Province of Ontario.
At the first sign of scouring in the calf the milk intake should be markedly reduced for 24 hours (preferably) or 12 hours (at least) and a warm electrolyte solution substituted (using a bottle and nipple for sucking calves).
