The QEW is signed with a dark blue-on-yellow provincial highway sign with the letters "QEW." For the most part, the 400-Series Highways were not touched in the mass-downloading of highways.
While this route is not a provincially maintained highway, it is numbered in sequence with the provincial highways and is very much related to the rest of the system.
Ontario is unique among all Canadian provinces in that it is the only one which actually has a county/regional road configuration.

History of Ontario's Kings Highways - Ontario Highway Sign History
The painted Provincial Highway signs were produced on thin sign blanks made out of tin, with crimped metal edges similar to the edges seen on 1923 and 1924-dated Ontario license plates.
The embossing on these early Provincial Highway signs was very similar to Ontario's license plates produced after 1921, suggesting that these early Provincial Highway signs may have in fact been produced by a company who normally manufactured the province's license plates.
However, shortly after the coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, it was decided to remove the legend "THE KING'S HIGHWAY" from all highway signage, in recognition of the new Sovereign.

Ontario Highways: The King's Highway System
While the original intent--and still a major focus--of the Ontario Highways website was to catalog the various numbered provincial highways, there are other types of marked highways in the province.
Some of the "other" highways are posted along the numbered routes, while others have nothing to do with the provincially-maintained system of highways.
Municipal Freeways - Even before the era of provincial highway downloading in the 1990s, Ontario had its share of freeways which were not maintained by the provincial government.
