Hwy 400 is the main route carrying Torontoans northward toward "Cottage Country" in the north-central portions of the province.
Hwy 400, or at least a southern extension of it, was originally intended to proceed south of Hwy 401 to meet with the Gardiner Expwy (Former Hwy 2) at the lakefront somewhere east of the Humber River.
The portion of the highway south of Airport Rd is maintained by the Airport Authority and not the MTO.

My interest in highways has constantly been there, but it was not something that I talked about much for many years, because I assumed there was nobody else out there as interested as I am.
During the same year, the Historical Highways Society of Ontario (HHSO) was formed by some fellow Ontario roadgeeks, to preserve the history of what was once a large King's Highway network in the Province of Ontario.
Highway historian and HHSO co-president Cameron Bevers discusses the development of the King's Highways throughout the past 85 years, including the building of the QEW and Highway 401, the different route number shields used over the years, and the mass highway downloading of the late 1990s.

Immediately after the war, the DHO re-started construction on the highways which sat dormant for six years, including the QEW and Hwy 400, as well as beginning the first actual construction on the new trans-provincial freeway that would become Hwy 401.
The shields, in the shape and general design of the King's Highway shields, were white-on-blue (instead of the normal fl-on-white) with the large letters "M-C" in the main part of the shield and the word "Freeway" in much smaller type at the bottom, where the province's name usually resides.
In the era of highway downloading that is the late 1990s, the entire length of Hwy 401 has been retained in the provincial highway system, although many of the parallel routes, the old Hwy 2 in particular, have been lost to the cuts.

While some content is available at this location at this time, the remaining information currently found at the former Ontario Highways website is being migrated to this new location over the coming weeks and months.
The Ontario Highways website has been online since 1997 and the current site redesign and transformation began in 2005 with an expected completion sometime in early 2006.
However, the site is expected to be much more dynamic in the future and updates will be made as changes to the provincial highway system occur.
