Ontario, along with New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Quebec, is one of the four original provinces of Canada when the nation was formed on July 1, 1867 by the British North America Act.
Ontario is bounded on the north by Hudson Bay and James Bay, on the east by Quebec, on the west by Manitoba, and on the south by the U.S. states of Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York.
The primary highway along the southern route is Highway 401, North America's busiest highway, while the primary highway across the northern route is Highway 417 and Highway 17, part of the Trans-Canada Highway.

Trans-Canada Highway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Winnipeg's Perimeter Highway (the southern half of which, Manitoba Provincial Highway 100, is officially part of the Trans-Canada) gives highway drivers a way of bypassing the city completely.
From Truro, the highway continues east for 57 km to New Glasgow (where it links with provincial Highway 106 — that portion of the Trans-Canada running to the ferry terminal at Caribou), and then northeast for another 112 km to the Canso Causeway which crosses the Strait of Canso to Cape Breton Island near Port Hawkesbury.
From the Canso Causeway, the highway continues east for 144 km using the designation of provincial Highway 105 in Cape Breton, until reaching the Marine Atlantic ferry terminal at North Sydney.

History of Ontario's Kings Highways - Introduction to Ontario Highways
The 407, 410, 416, 417, 420 and 427 all adopted their numbers from another highway that was bypassed by the 400-series route.
For example, most of the highways in the 50s lie between Brantford and the Niagara Peninsula, and most of the highways in the 80s are in Southwestern Ontario.
I suppose the purpose of this suffix was to denote a "connector" route.

Ontario Provincial Highways (400-427 + QEW)
Hwy 417 was recently extended northwest from its former terminus at Hwy 7 along the route of Hwy 17, extending Hwy 417 by an additional 9.5 km.
The gradual lengthening of Hwy 417 is scheduled to continue for the next several years, as the MTO upgrades the eastern end of Hwy 17 to a fully-controlled access freeway and gives the newly upgraded sections the Hwy 417 designation.
From the current western terminus of Hwy 417 (the easterm end of Hwy 17), the MTO is currently planning the twinning of the highway into the Arnprior area, a distance of approximately 30km.

 Highways
My interest in highways has constantly been there, but it was not something that I talked about much for many years, because I assumed there was nobody else out there as interested as I am.
During the same year, the Historical Highways Society of Ontario (HHSO) was formed by some fellow Ontario roadgeeks, to preserve the history of what was once a large King's Highway network in the Province of Ontario.
Highway historian and HHSO co-president Cameron Bevers discusses the development of the King's Highways throughout the past 85 years, including the building of the QEW and Highway 401, the different route number shields used over the years, and the mass highway downloading of the late 1990s.

 Ontario Provincial Highways Home Page
The provincial highway system in Ontario has undergone the most significant changes since 1937, when the Department of Northern Development (responsible for the construction and maintenance of roads in Northern Ontario) was merged with the Department of Highways (now Ministry of Transportation).
Other minor routes which formerly ran parallel with more major provincial highways have been moved onto the major route, as was the case with, for example, Hwy 12 and Hwy 400 in Simcoe County, and Hwy 24 and Hwy 403 in Brant County.
Now that a single former provincial highway may have a dozen county/regional road numbers, travellers and tourists are just some of the people who will become quite confused at the multitude of route numbers, most of which do not appear on their highway maps.

Highway 417 (Ontario) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the Eastern part of the city of Ottawa at an interchange known as "the split", Highway 417 is built on a new alignment which bypasses the existing Highway 17.
For many years, Highway 417 had the distinction of one of the few "isolated" 400-Series Highways, without direct freeway access to the "backbone" of the network, Highway 401, until the completion of Highway 416 in 1999.
As of 2005, The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO), is in the preliminary planning stages of an extensive upgrade of the infrastructure of the Queensway, along Highway 417 from Highway 416 easterly to Anderson Road.
