Ontonagon County is a county of the U.S. state of Michigan.
In the county the population was spread out with 20.20% under the age of 18, 4.70% from 18 to 24, 23.30% from 25 to 44, 30.20% from 45 to 64, and 21.60% who were 65 years of age or older.
The county government operates the jail, maintains rural roads, operates the major local courts, keeps files of deeds and mortgages, maintains vital records, administers public health regulations, and participates with the state in the provision of welfare and other social services.

Legend says Ontonagon (Nantaonagon) is derived from the Chippewa Indian Language meaning "lost bowl," a reference to a time when a young Indian girl washing dishes at the mouth of the river had a bowl swept away by the current.
While there is a tradition that says that men were working the copper hills of Ontonagon County as long as 4,000 years ago, the first Europeans ever recorded to have visited the area of Ontonagon Country was in the 1600s, when the French trappers came into the area.
Ontonagon County found some prosperity in one of its natural resources, the vast stands of giant white pine.

The cabin is on the shore of lake Superior in a desolate area on a dirt road not too far away from the nearest town.
I’m aware that there was credible sighting in 1998 by a bear hunter on the Firesteel river in Greenland county less than 5 mi away from the cabin that I was staying at.
Also, there is an account of an Ontonagon logger who claimed that 2 bigfoots rescued him from under a fallen log.

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: The FHWA, in cooperation with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), is preparing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) Section 4(f) Evaluation for the proposed replacement of the M-64 swing bridge over the Ontonagon River in Ontonagon, Ontonagon County, Michigan.
Low underclearance in combination with relatively close pier spacing and windrowed ice at the mouth of the river has also created ice jams on the upstream side of the bridge during the spring breakup.
Alternative D is approximately 1.9 kilometers (1.2 miles) long with a 350 meter (1150 foot) long fixed structure that crosses the Ontonagon River upstream of Alternative D. This alternative may involve up to ten residential displacements.

 Paramelaconite, Algomah Mine, Michigan
During the present study a third specimen from the type locality, donated by Koenig to the A. Seaman Museum at the Michigan College of Mining and Technology, was found and used for purposes of comparison.
The specimen is a small, superb group of crystals associated with connellite and malachite.
Several other specimens were found in the museum with the locality given as the Algomah mine, Ontonagon County, Michigan.
