In 1991 a devastating tornado destroyed the north side of Oologah, including the town's public school.
One of Oologah's most profitable ventures is the Mustangs high school football team, which took back to back state championships in 1997/98, and from the 2001 season through the 2004 season was the Class 4A-3 champions.

The city bills itself as the birthplace of entertainer Will Rogers, but this is an inaccuracy because he was born 12 miles to the north, in the town of Oologah, Oklahoma.

Born in 1879 on a large ranch in the Cherokee Nation near what later would become Oologah, Oklahoma, Will Rogers was taught by a freed slave how to use a lasso as a tool to work Texas Longhorn cattle on the family ranch.
It was on a flight to Alaska in 1935 with a daring one-eyed Oklahoma pilot named Wiley Post that their plane crashed and both men lost their lives.
Her body was taken by train to Oklahoma and laid to rest under the sarcophagus at the Will Rogers Memorial at Claremore.

 Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch in Oologah, Oklahoma
Dozens of Texas Longhorn cattle graze on the pastures of the Will Rogers' ranch, which Will called "The Dog Iron." His brand also was called "The Dog Iron." It is shaped like the ends to metal racks used in fireplaces to hold the wood.
He then was sent to various boarding schools but would come back to the ranch during the summer.
Throughout his life, Will Rogers would return to the place of his birth and dream of returning to the Oklahoma hills where he was born.
