  Introduction to the Oomycota
They are filamentous protists which must absorb their food from the surrounding water or soil, or may invade the body of another organism to feed.
"Oomycota" means "egg fungi," and refers to the large round oogonia, or structures containing the female gametes, as shown in this picture of the common "water mold" Saprolegnia.
The Oomycota were once classified as fungi, because of their filamentous growth, and because they feed on decaying matter like fungi.

Oomycota is a phylum of filamentous protists containing over 500 species.
"Oomycota" means "egg fungi", referring to the oversize oogonia which house the female gametes (eggs).
Oomycota is responsible for the decomposition and recycling of waste in their ecosystem, which tends to be moist, cool areas such as damp soil and freshwater habitats.

The combination of cellulose cell wall, biflatellated zoospores, one flagellum of the tinsel type and the other of the whiplash type, and gametangial copulation are characteristics that are shared with some members of the algal divisions Phaeophyta and Chrysophyta.

 Introduction
The phylum Oomycota, which has previously been classified as a protochtist by Margulis and Schwartz (1998) and Holt (1992), should be grouped with the fungi according to our phylogram.
The Oomycota have six changes from the other fungi, which shows that they are very different from the other phyla, however, they are still part of the same clade.
One of the phyla that were analyzed was the phylum Oomycota.

The Oomycota were previously classified as fungi (Sleigh 1989, Sparrow 1960, Margulis and Schwartz 1998).
The Oomycota resemble the fungi kingdom in their saprobic or symbiotrophic mode of nutrition (Margulis and Schwartz 1998, Waggoner 1995).
The Oomycota are not even discussed as being a part of these protist groups.

They were long thought to be true fungi, and are still considered to be legitimate subjects for teaching and research by mycologists.
Most Oomycota have hyphae without crosswalls, they reproduce asexually by way of zoospores and they reproduce sexually by fusion of compatible nuclei, meiosis, and production of oospores.
Oomycota are largely soil- or water-borne fungi, but one, Phytophthora infestans, played an important role in precipitating the legendary Irish potato famine.

This might be observed in various groups of Oomycota Oomycota: within these fungi some groups are completely adapted to live in water (Saprolegniales) others to live outside water in plants (Peronosporales), either in the roots of them, below the surface of the soil, or in plant tissues stretching into the air.
Teleomorph: the sporocysts (sporangia) and spores of the sexual stages are produced in close connection with syngamy, karyogamy and mostly with meiosis.
The female sporocysts of Oomycota are called oogonia because of the formation of egg cells inside of them.
