  Algae - LoveToKnow 1911
Again, in oogamous reproduction, while in general only one oosphere is differentiated in the oogonium, in Sphaeroplea several oospheres arise in each oogonium; and while the oospheres usually contract away from the oogonial wall, acquiring for themselves a new cell-wall after fertilization, in Coleochaete the oosphere remains throughout in contact with the oogonial wall.
The oosphere is not differentiated within the wall of the oogonium, but certain cells known as wendungszellen, the significance of which has given rise to much speculation, are cut off from the basal portion of the parent-cell during its development.
Suddenly the attraction ceases, and the oosphere is fertilized, probably at that moment, by the entry of a single antherozoid into the substance of the oosphere; a cell-wall is formed thereupon, in some cases in so short an interval as five minutes.

Reproduction Of Plants - LoveToKnow 1911
Certain forms of the male organ, the spermogonium and the antheridium, give rise to male cells which are termed spermatic when they are nonciliate, spermatozoids when they are ciliated and free-swimming.
When an oosphere fuses with a male cell, or with the undifferentiated contents of a male organ, the process is fertilization, and the product is a single cell termed oospore.
The male prothallium consists of the few cells formed by the germinating pollen-grain (microspore); and though it is quite independent, since the microspores are shed, it grows parasitically in the tissues upon which the microspore has been deposited in pollination.

The oogonium, seated on a stalk cell, is surrounded by an investment consisting of five spirally-wound cells, from the projecting ends of which segments are cut off, constituting the so-called stigma.
The oogonia arise on a stalk cell from the lining layer of the cavity, the contents dividing to form eight oospheres as in Fucus, four as in Ascophyllum, two as in Pelvetia, or one only as in Hallidrys.
It would seem that eight nuclei primarily arise in all Fucaceae, and that a number corresponding to the number of oospheres subsequently formed is reserved, the rest being discharged to the periphery, where they may be detected at a late stage.

Another such case is that of Humaria rutilans (Ascomycete), in which nuclear fusion has been observed (Fraser) in hyphae of the hypothecium : the asci are developed from these hyphae, and in them meiosis takes place; there are no sexual organs.
Eu-apogamy: no kind of sexual act (a) The gametophyte is haploid: (a) The sporophyte is developed from the unfertilized oosphere: no such case of true parthenogenesis has yet been observed.
Again, it has been observed (Winkler) that a non-nucleated fragment of an oosphere of Cystoseira (Fucaceae) can be " fertilized " by a spermatozoid and will then grow anddivide to form a small embryo, though it necessarily contains only the x number of chromosomes.

One nucleus from each group, the polar nucleus, passes to the centre of the sac, where the two fuse to form the so-called definitive nucleus.
Of the three cells at the micropylar end of the sac, all naked cells (the so-called egg-apparatus), one is the egg-cell or oosphere, the other two, which may be regarded as representing abortive egg-cells (in rare cases capable of fertilization), are known as synergidae.
The three cells at the opposite end are known as antipodal cells and become invested with a cell-wall.

• Female gametangium – oogonium that contains multiple gametes – oospheres in the Saprolegniales
• In Saprolegniomycetidae – multiple oospheres in oogonium – formed from a large central vacuole that produces furrows that cleave out oospheres before fertilization
• In Peronosporomycetidae – single oosphere in oogonium – oosphere is not delimited by membrane until plasmogamy occurs, no central vacuole, periplasm is present (cytoplasm in oogonium that is not incorporated into oosphere)
