OOSTERBEEK - Een bronzen adelaar van een meter hoogte en 120 kilo zwaar is vrijdag gearriveerd in Oosterbeek.
Dat het beeld in Oosterbeek komt te staan is opmerkelijk, aangezien de gemeente al meer dan twintig jaar geleden besloot dat er geen nieuwe monumenten meer geplaatst konden worden in het dorp waar de geallieerden hun hoofdkwartier vestigden in 1944.

Tussen 1630 en 1659 moeten de toenmalige eigenaren van Oosterbeek de oorspronkelijke boerenwoning hebben vervangen door een herenhuis, want bij de verkoop aan de familie Van der Dussen in 1659 is Oosterbeek al uitgegroeid tot een huis, een bijgebouwde stal, plantagieën en een bos met een bequam Thuynhuys en 39 morgen land.
Oosterbeek groeide daarna nog verder uit en kende vele eigenaren.

Oosterbeek Church first featured in the fighting at Arnhem on 19th September 1944, when Major Richard Lonsdale, second in command of 11th Bn Parachute Regiment, gathered the survivors of the fighting around St Elisabeth Hospital.
The defenders of this sector of the Oosterbeek Perimeter became known as 'Lonsdale Force' and the church soon known as 'Lonsdale Church'.
Close by was Kate Ter Horst's house, used as an aid post, guns of the 1st Airlanding Light Regiment dug in around the church site, and at the close of the battle, there were many foxholes of the survivors of 1st Airborne.
