Topic: Ootheca

  German Cockroach
The ootheca is approximately 8mm in length by 3mm in width, which in relation to the female is large.
The ootheca shows a sequence of colour changes, from a pale white in the early stage, through a pink colour after a few hours, then to a light brown before becoming a deep chestnut brown after a day or so.
The ootheca is carried for an average of ten days, although this incubation period may be shortened by a day and a half for each degree F rise.

The ootheca is formed in the female and as it exits it is stamped into shape by the ovipositor valves (rather like a snackwich maker gives toasted bread those troughs and ridges), and hardens on being exposed to air.
The female carries the ootheca round on the end of her abdomen for varying lengths of time before dropping it on the ground or glueing it to something.
The ootheca is produced inside the female but instead of being laid, it is retained in a uterus or brood sac where the eggs develop.

The eggs are produced in an egg case called an ootheca this may produce 30 to 300 young mantids depending on the species.
The ootheca is a sort of polystyrene egg box which is secreted by the female as a liquid and then whipped into a froth around the egg cells, it varies in structure between species.
The ootheca provides some protection against the environment and hides the eggs from many predators, however many are still parasitised by members of the Hymenoptera Parasitica, whose long thin ovipositors allow them to lay their eggs inside the cells hidden within the hardened foam of the ootheca Hatching usually takes between 3 and 6 months.

These roaches have relatively recently on the evolutionary scale begun to retain their ootheca (egg case) until birth rather than deposit it immediately for external incubation.
The function of this behavior is unknown, but it appears as if the female is almost 'air drying' the ootheca before retracting it into her body.
Such behavior is quite common and the ootheca nearly always subsequently carried to term except in cases of environmental stress, illness, or malnutrition.

The width of the abdomen of a Hisser is wider than the thickness/height of its body, so, it is much easier for her to store her ootheca inside of her brood pouch in “horizontal” direction, once each egg is formatted in the same hight with proper numbers inside of her blood pouch.
Needless to say, for Hisser babies to wiggle out from the each egg of ootheca, it is absolutely necessary for the ootheca to be placed inside of mother Hisser horizontally; otherwise, baby hissers can not come out in orderly fashion if not they can not come out at all from their each egg case.
