One theory is that the Micmac people originally occupied the St. Lawrence River valley and were "driven from this early habitant down the St. John valley to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia by the Iroquoian tribes from the Great Lakes.
At the time Mascarene was making his observations, in the early part of the 18th century, I speculate, the Micmac population was at its low point.
