There's plenty of historic blurring among opera, op←ra comique, light opera, operetta, musical comedy, and musicals.
CARMEN was written for the opera comique with dialogue - a tragic operetta if you need to pigeonhole it.
Other genres of musical theater have less singing, usually assigning the sung parts to what might be parallel to arias, duets, ensembles, etc. in opera.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe CARMEN was not given at the Paris Opera for many years, because of its spoken dialogue.
In Paris it could only be performed at the Opera Comique.
Was that why someone turned the spoken parts into recitative, so CARMEN and FLUTE could be performed in houses where spoken dialogue wasn't permitted?
