'Opal Fruits' is the name of a popular fruit-flavoured chewy sweet that has been on sale in Great Britain for some years.
Oranges were not and are not indigenous fruit: what fruit was available had to be imported from Britain's traditional enemies, France and Spain, and was therefore hard to come by.
Exhorted from the pulpits and fired with indignant scorn of the effete, almost papist, monarch and his foreign fruit fixation, the people laboured mightily to flatten their vowels and at length the famous 'great vowel shift' was complete.

 Rebranding and Cultural Destruction
The last packets of Opal Fruits sweets are disappearing from the shelves of British shops forever.
Not because they have been discontinued, but because the manufacturers, Mars, have decided the sweets should be called the same name in Britain as they are in the rest of the world, Starburst.
Opal Fruits is not the first famous British brand name that Mars has axed in favour of a more internationally better-known one.

But why would a company throw away a brand name it has spent millions of pounds, and in the case of Opal Fruits nearly 40 years, to establish in the public's mind.
Although Mars is spending £10m to publicise the Opal Fruits' name change it hopes to ultimately save money from uniting the sweets under the Starburst name.
The Branding Manager of Opal Fruits, Steve Reid, says global branding is a natural consequence of the proliferation of international media such as satellite TV and the Internet.

Flumcake On-line: A Brief History of Flum
The name Starburst is rather pathetic and, while it may appeal to young children, it is hardly going to appeal to the mature sweet buyer.
The name summons up images of summer days and sweets that were specifically designe d to make your mouth water, as opposed to the ones that were made to make your mouth dry up and the short-lived sweet that was made to make your mouth urinate.
Anyway, I propose that we start a campaign against the so-called Starburst and try and get the name Opal Fruits to be reinstated into it's rightful place.
