OPATIJA was named after the Benedictine abbey (Opatija means abbey in Croatian) that was located oil the sea coast itself This small abbey was probably built in the beginning of the 12th century, as were all the other Benedictine abbeys in Istria and the region of Kvarner.
The abbey and the church next to it were renovated and expanded in 1506 during the period of the abbot Simon (Šimun), as evidenced by the inscription on the lintel of Saint Jacob's Church.

Due to a relatively constant temperature (winter average 7.0 °C, summer average 21.9 °C), high air pressure and constant circulation of air, the climate in Opatija is relaxing and refreshing.

Opatija started as a tiny, nondescript fishing village with a church and a population in the low double digits.
It didn't hurt that in 1873 the railroad built a spur to connect Opatija to Ljubljana and beyond, and that the town was given a medical imprimatur as a healthy environment.
In fact, Opatija originally was a health resort for Austrian snowbirds; its season ran from October to May. Thanks to word-of-mouth promotion from the railroad and from prominent folks who visited Opatija, the city became wildly popular.
