Opel Diplomat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Opel Diplomat is an automobile from German maker Opel.
Opels top-line saloon traditionally was the Kapitän (introduced in 1939).
The new body was a typical GM effort and bore a strong resemblance to the contemporary Holden Statesman of Australia.

Opel models are also sold under other GM brand names, such as Vauxhall in the UK, Holden in Australasia, and Chevrolet in Latin America.
Opel is the main GM brand name in Europe except in the UK, where GM's other European subsidiary, Vauxhall Motors, still uses its own brand name.
The Opel name largely disappeared from the UK in 1981 after Vauxhall and Opel dealerships were merged, with only the Manta being sold as an Opel, until it was discontinued in 1988.

 Back From Oblivion
But in the case of Opel, at least, it was clear that the expansion of this industrial machine was not directed in any way toward military objectives.
In 1942 our entire investment in Opel amounted to about $35 million, and under a ruling which the Treasury Department had made concerning assets in enemy hands, we were allowed to write off the investment against current taxable income.
Opel had looked the spectre of oblivion in the eye and come back stronger than ever.

 Opel GT Ignition Tips
The Opel GT Ignition Switch is prone to internal resistance buildup and premature failure, due to a primitive circuit design which routes up to 30 amps from the battery through it, when the starter is cranking.
(In the mid-1960's, Opel rummaged through the parts bin, using the switch from the Opel Admiral, and some parts from French sources.
To help prevent this, the Opel GT Ignition Switch can be tested, either in the car (using key to turn) or off the car (using a screwdriver to turn), with a simple ohm meter.
