Open a terminal, and you can just about convince yourself you are working in a *nix environment (if you ignore the pretty frame elements around the terminal window, and some directory differences).
BeOS has a pretty good range of options, but not the ones you are most familiar with on Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms.
BeOS is a nice place to work when you just want to get your Web work done, without having to think too much about the limits of the underlying operating system.

In that time, their ~100 engineers have been able to boot the system on the vast majority of modern hardware (that's not to imply full support, just that it can at least be booted on most modern hardware).
It is *very* clear to anyone who actually sat down and used both BeOS and Linux that this press coverage would come out very differently, with Linux getting high marks as a server OS and BeOS high marks as a desktop/workstation OS.

Linux is not a niche OS because it is open source, it is a niche OS because it is based on 20-year old UNIX and is very clunky to work with.
BeOS is my main OS, of course… but I’m not blind either and I don’t appreciate the fact that Be Inc. has some great technology that could vanish with the company if it were to fold.
If anything were to be open source, then they should somehow figure out a way to develop (either now, or after the revenue-boost of R6)an open-source ‘hook’ into the OGL API, for 3d Driver development.

The first step is to install BeOS R5 (5.0.3) on your computer, if you don't have that already.
You may be able to get Haiku working on other mutations of BeOS as well, such as Max Edition, PhOS, Dano, and Zeta, but this article only considers BeOS R5.
Note: it is not a smart idea to do the CVS checkout on a Windows machine (at work) and then transport the files to your BeOS partition (at home).

Because I like to make things 'foolproof', I was working on making sure that the driver limits the user to the constraints imposed by all seven supported cards (I am counting both Millenium cards also now, though support is preliminary).
This turns out to be a bit tricky, and I stumbled upon a BeOS bug in the process.

Now to be fair, Be registered the domains way back last September, so it looks like the registrations are more a preparatory move than a statement of intent, but it certainly suggests that the company is coming round to that way of thinking.
Be now gives away BeOS to anyone willing to download it, and has done since early 2000, not long after the company announced it would be focusing its efforts on the information appliance biz - such as it is - with its BeIA client OS and back-end server platform.
Still, it will be interesting to see if Be does release its OS to the open source world.

BTW it seems BeOS R5 supports one connected USB printer only.

If BeOS is killed by Palm, then I can see value in such a project, but what happens if Palm revive the BeOS to its former glory?
