Open City captivates the viewer almost immediately as it is a moving story.
What makes Open City a masterpiece is not only its trim, forceful screenplay but Rossellini's ability to utilize the wartime, grainy film stock and presence of the actual, newly defeated fascist army to portray a sense of immediate reality of the occupation and those who so courageously fought against the fascists.
Open City's plot and characters are fl and white, because, to the courageous resistance fighters in fascist occupied Rome, there was no luxury of quibbling over nuances and perspective.

  Open City
Open City is widely regarded as the most important film in Italian cinema history.
In World War II, Rome was officially designated an Open City; not a military target according to the international rules of war, yet firmly in the vise-grip of German martial law.
The studios, as well as much of the city, had been bombed, and the country was on the verge of social and economic collapse.

Open City movie Review at The Z Review UK movie review
Open City is my most recent acquisition, and it is interesting, if not always my cup of tea.
Open City is a lot different from the Hollywood pictures of the 1930`s and 40`s, in that there are not a lot of big stars, but it really is not much more realistic than, say, The Grapes of Wrath, which also told a dark story about real people in a harsh situation.
Open City is still interesting in many ways; for depicting a situation which at the time happened not too long before, during the Nazi occupation, and for the effective melodrama.

 Roma, citta aperta (Open City)
Open City took the world by storm in late 1945 and early 1946, ushering in a new filmmaking movement called neorealism.
Open City was shot just after German occupation of Italy, when the country was quite simply ravaged by the effects of World War II.
Anyway, the idea that Open City is documenting the facts is by far it's strength, but the Nazis being lumped into a big one-dimensional group partially undermines the believability of the Italian characters that, while obviously sympathetically drawn as the good hardworking but suffering and impoverished people, by all means really did exist.

By January, the city had become the hiding place of thousands of persons who were eluding the occupation power or the Fascist Republicans.
The idea of Rome, the open city, was dear to the heart of Pius XII, and he devoted most of his energy during 1944 to making that ideal a reality.
It is impossible to suppose that Pius XII could fail to react with some effort to avert the worst, and the record of the Pontiff's concern for the lives of the unfortunates who fell into German and neo-Fascist hands during those months shows eloquently his sensitivity to such situations.
