Jewel Box - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Jewel Box (also known as Open Cluster NGC 4755, NGC 4755, Kappa Crucis, or the Kappa Crucis Cluster) is an open cluster in the Crux constellation.
It was one of the finest open clusters discovered by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille when he was in South Africa during 1751–1752.
This cluster is one of the youngest known, with an estimated age of only 7.1 million years.

 Open Clusters
Open clusters (relative to globular clusters) are young clusters of metal rich Population I stars.
NGC 2264, the cluster associated with the famous cone nebula in Monoceros, is a very young cluster of stars lying in front of and slightly embedded in a dark cloud, about 740 to 800 pc (2400 — 2600 light years) away.
Although clusters are often moved out of the galactic plane by their passage through interstellar clouds or close approaches to other massive bodies, it takes a very long time for the orbital plane to become as inclined as that of NGC 752.

 Open Star Clusters
Over 1100 open clusters are known in our Milky Way Galaxy, and this is probably only a small percentage of the total population which is probably some factor higher; estimates of as many as about 100,000 Milky Way open clusters have been given.
The first open clusters have been known since prehistoric times: The Pleiades (M45), the Hyades and the Beehive or Praesepe (M44) are the most prominent examples, but Ptolemy had also mentioned M7 and the Coma Star Cluster (Mel 111) as early as 138 AD.
All the diffuse nebulae in Messier's catalog are associated with open clusters of young stars which have formed of the nebula's material in (astronomically) very recent times, and are still formed today in many cases.

Open clusters are groups of stars formed together in the spiral arms of a galaxy and held together by mutual gravitational attraction.
Open cluster NGC 2516, and even its constituent stars, is clearly visible to the naked eye.
The open cluster was chosen as a calibration target for XMM-Newton because the locations of each of these stars is already determined with a very high precision by other ground-based and space-borne observatories, including NASA's Chandra.

Star clusters are both the youngest and oldest easily recognisable objects in the Galaxy.
Globular clusters, like the magnificent southern naked-eye cluster 47 Tucanae (alongside) are the oldest star clusters known, with ages comparable with the age of the Universe itself.
In contrast, young clusters such as NGC 3292 (AAT 10) are just a few million years old, brash newcomers in the Milky Way, and still associated with the gas and dust from which they have so recently formed.
