Open source, or free software as it was originally called, has become in recent years one of the most talked about phenomena in the ICT world.
In a reflection of the development process for individuals, countries that profit most from open source are those that contribute back to the community and knowledge base, and there is a built-in incentive (and low barriers) for a shift from being a recipient of skills to being a skills donor.
This is common sense, but does not seem to be reflected in the BSA estimates of the ‘losses’ to the software industry based on piracy, which assume that all the estimated unlicensed copies of software in a country should (or could) be replaced with paid licensed copies.
