Automatic bolt catch release apparatus for firearm - Patent 4128042
The bolt carrier of a conventional closed-bolt M16 rifle is retained in the open position upon firing the last round in a magazine, and the bolt carrier is released by manually operating the bolt catch 94 after a fresh magazine is inserted into the lower receiver.
Since the bolt carrier 112 of the present open bolt conversion is always retained in the open or rearward position, however, the open bolt rifle may appear to be ready to fire even while the bolt carrier is engaged by the bolt catch.
The bolt carrier is pulled backward in the conventional manner, and the bolt carrier pushes the hammer 37 to the cocked position in which the surface 59 of the hammer is engaged by the surface 60 of the automatic sear 61.

 UZI Talk - Bolts
The open bolt has a fixed firing pin that's an integral piece of the bolt face and causes the round to fire whenever the bolt travels forward to a closed position.
Additionally, the bolt for the semi automatic version of the Carbine has a slot cut into the right side, allowing the bolt to pass over the blocking rail that is welded on the inside of the Model A and Model B receiver.
Two openings are made in the trunion that the feet slide into when the bolt closes, allowing it to close fully on the chamber.

Open bolt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
When the trigger is pulled the bolt goes forward, feeding a round from the magazine into the chamber and firing it.
This is not generally true, however, as the operation of basic open bolt weapons sends the bolt carrier back into a cocked position via the excess gas from the spent round.
In the U.S., the ATF made a ruling in 1982 that semi-automatic open bolt weapons are readily convertible to fully-automatic fire, therefore such weapons manufactured after the date of this ruling are classed and controlled as fully-automatic weapons (weapons manufactured prior to the ruling are grandfathered and are still considered semi-automatic).

Citrus: Tommy Bolt says U.S. Open in the major to win
Bolt, 88, played in 17 Opens, winning in 1958 at famed Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. The native Oklahoman led after every round with 71-71-69-72 for a 3-over-par 283, and won by four over 22-year-old Gary Player.
Bolt, dubbed "Terrible Tommy" and "Thunder Bolt" by the press, is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, but he was under par only twice in 48 Open rounds.
BOLT: It's a combination of the narrow fairways and the high rough and the slick greens and the pressure of being the Open.

One thing I have heard is that open bolt weapons don't heat up as fast, as you generally have air moving through the periods between fire.
The open bolt action and movement of the bolt is actually quite light, and it is of a rotating bolt design, also like the M-16.
The main concern I would have though in using an open bolt is fear of case head seperations resulting from the case being extracted from the chamber while pressures were excessive.

In this kind of action the bolt is held open by the trigger sear when the gun is at rest.
The section to the right of that fl shaft is attached to the bolt and runs overtop of the ejector pushing it into the ejection port through a slot in the receiver and bolt.
The distance the shell was ejected depended on bolt velocity, but the nature of the system meant that the shell would be pushed out even if the bolt was moving very slow.

Sports: Bolt from the blue, without the thunder
Bolt might recently have been denied a spot in the World Golf Hall of Fame, but he is the resident legend here.
Bolt started on tour in 1946 but ran out of money and had to get a job before he returned for good in 1950.
Bolt was tied with Nicklaus for the lead through 63 holes of the 1971 PGA Championship in Palm Beach Gardens, but the Golden Bear played those last nine holes in 3 under and Bolt settled for third.

Question? What does firing from an open bolt mean? - THR   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The bolt usually has a fixed firing pin and the gun essentially slam fires and blows the bolt back to repeat the cycle until the trigger is let go of, or the magazine emptys.
The bolt is held back by the sear and released on the trigger pull, fires until trigger released and then locks back on the sear until trigger pulled again.
IMO, a fixed pin, open bolt design is easier to (illegally) convert to full auto, as you don't have to worry about issues around timing the bolt lockup with the hammer strike, and thus probably runs afoul of the "readily convertible" premise.

Ironically, Bolt, known for a mercurial temperament during his PGA TOUR career that began in 1946, was serene that week at Southern Hills.
Bolt, then 42, posted rounds of 71, 71, 69 and 72 for a 3-over-par total of 283, four strokes better than Player's score.
Bolt, who learned the game as a caddy in Shreveport, La., and is still a colorful character, is innately comfortable dealing with the captains of American business.

 Where's the Bolt?
In a closed bolt system, the bolt remains forward, sealing the breech (back of the barrel) until the paintgun is fired.
In an open bolt system, the bolt remains open until the time of firing, when it closes, chambering the paintball, then it opens again, for a new ball to fall into place.
Many people argue that since the ball is jostled in the fraction of a second before firing, and since the bolt may open again before the ball actually exits the barrel, an open bolt paintgun will not be capable of the same accuracy as a closed bolt paintgun.

Jacksonville.com: ** World Golf Village Hall of Fame - Tommy Bolt **
Bolt has been selected for induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame through the Veterans Category, an avenue for induction created in 2000 to honor professional players whose accomplishments occurred primarily before 1962 and who did not qualify for induction through any other means.
Bolt, of course, disputes the tale and will only admit that he had a face fixed in fury and always was caught exploding at inopportune moments like when a cameraman captured the memorable image of him at the 1960 U.S. Open tossing a club into the lake in front of the 18th tee.
Bolt also got a grip on his temper in time to win the one title he desperately coveted, the U.S. Open, in his home state of Oklahoma in 1958.

Angel open or closed bolt system? - Paintball-Guns.com Forums
open and closed bolt systems dont neccesarily mean its physically closed up or physically open in the air but it means what the job of the bolt is.
Open or closed bolt describes the action of the bolt when the gun is fired.
Open bolt systems are more simple, and allow for a higher rate of fire, closed bolts systems are more accurate because the motion generated by the cycling of the bolt occurs after the gun has been fired.

The bolt may be kept closed during the firing sequence only by the inertia of the bolt.
Because the inertia of the bolt is what keeps the bolt closed, the bolt of an open bolt weapon is of necessity much heavier than a closed bolt gun.
The way it works on a closed bolt version is that when you load the mag, insert it into the gun, and cock it, the bolt pushes forward, strips the round from the magazine, and puts it into the chamber.

Pulling the trigger releases the bolt, as the bolt moves forward it strips a round out of the mag, chambers and fires it just as it comes into battery.
When the trigger is released the bolt catches on the sear as it is blown back after the last round fired.
Firing closed bolt - most semi auto or select fire rifles, carbines, semi auto pistols, etc. have a floating or seperate firing pin that the hammer strikes to drive forward to pop the primer.

It functions by holding the bolt open with pressure from the solenoid valve, which is vented to initiate firing.
It uses the same mechanical sear to hold the bolt in the open position while idle, which is pulled away during firing to allow the bolt to be blown forward.
The closed bolt action couldn't surpass 13-14 bps so the marker was shelved, assuming that it wouldn't be as popular as a faster, open bolt version (which was very likely an accurate assumption).
