Circulatory system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The circulatory systems of all vertebrates, as well as of annelids (for example, earthworms) and cephalopods (squids and octopuses) are closed, meaning that the blood never leaves the system of blood vessels consisting of arteries, capillaries and veins.
The human circulatory system is comprised of the blood, the vascular system, and the heart.
The circulatory system of the fetus is different, as the fetus does not use its lungs yet and obtains oxygen and nutrients from the placenta through the umbilical cord.

System - Open Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
A system typically consists of components (or elements) which are connected together in order to facilitate the flow of information, matter or energy.
Depending on the type of system, a system can often be distinguished from individual machines, elements or processes of that system by the number, arrangements and complexity of those elements.
In the human body, we refer to such systems as the nervous system, the circulatory system, the digestive system, the reproductive system, and the respiratory system.

After birth, the fetal circulatory system undergoes several anatomical changes, including closure of the ductus arteriosusIn the developing fetus, the ductus arteriosus (DA) is a shunt connecting the pulmonary artery to the aortic arch that allows much of the blood from the right ventricle to bypass the fetus' fluid-filled lungs.

Fetus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The circulatory system of a human fetus works differently from that of born humans, mainly because the lungs are not in use: the fetus obtains oxygen and nutrients from the mother through the placenta and the umbilical cord.
In the fetus, there is an opening between the right and left atrium (the foramen ovale), and most of the blood flows from the right into the left atrium, then into the left ventricle from where it is pumped through the aorta into the body.
Infants with certain congenital anomalies of the heart can survive only as long as the ductus remains open: in such cases the closure of the ductus can be delayed by the administration of prostaglandins to permit sufficient time for the surgical correction of the anomalies.

Re: Which types of animals do not have hearts? I can't quite remember.
Though the circulatory system begins with simple diffusion and the gastrovascular cavity and seems to end with the four chambered mammalian heart, the development of different hearts in organisms is actually convergent evolution, the frog, worm, and human heart all developed separately and independently of each other.
Open and closed circulatory systems then serve organisms whether vessels are needed to transport materials (closed) or merely circulation through the whole body.
Because overall circulatory system is closed, in each full passage through the system, the same volume of blood has to move through the circulation path as through the much more extensive body circulation path.

Re: How animals circulatory systems (open/closed) are suited to their lifestyle
This is a good question, and one that has been studied quite extensively, briefly put however, with the closed circulatory system, blood remains in the blood vessels, with the open circulatory system, blood is pumped into the body spaces (sinuses).
For example, the earthworm has a closed circulatory system consisting of a heart with 5 aortic arches and a dorsal blood vessel, the basic function is to transport digested nutrients to the cells.
In many adult insects the open circulatory system is specialized and operates in a highly sophisticated manner to regulate body temperature.

 Circulatory System
Arthropods, like insects and spiders, have an open circulatory system, in which the blood is pumped forward by the heart, but then flows through the body cavity, directly bathing the internal organs.
Vertebrates, like humans, have a closed circulatory system in which the blood stays in the circulatory system as it circulates, and chemicals are exchanged by diffusion.
