Dickenson411.com - Dickenson County Coal Miner's Memorial - Pit Mining
The planning of an open pit mine is, therefore, basically an exercise in economics, constrained by certain geologic and mining engineering aspects.
Open pit mines can be used in coal mining, and they are used extensively in "hard rock" mining for ores such as metal ores, copper, gold, iron, aluminum, and many minerals.
In a open pit coal mine, the pit bottom would be the bottom mined coal seam elevation, since it is usually feasible to extract multiple seams when surface mining coal.

MiningWatch > Open Pit/ Open Cast Mining
Thursday June 23, 2005 09:36 AM Open pit mining involves the extraction of a large amount of waste rock in order to extract the desired ore. Several square kilometers may be exposed in order create an open pit mine.
Open pit mining is less expensive than other types of mining, especially when the ore deposit is close to the surface.
However, open pit mines produce 50 times more waste rock than underground mines, and causes land disturbances from the removal of soil, vegetation and waste rock.

In order to develop the open pit it is necessary to dewater the mine to ensure that the water level remains below the pit floor.

A previous study of weathering of arsenian pyrite in similarly mineralized rocks at the Clio mine, in the nearby Jacksonville mining district, showed that arsenic released by weathering of arsenian pyrite is effectively attenuated by adsorption on goethite or coprecipitation with jarosite, depending upon the buffering capacity of the pyrite-bearing rock (Savage and others, 2000).
The fact that arsenic concentrations increased rapidly before the pit lake was deep enough to stratify shows that arsenic may not be attenuated in the ways that the earlier Clio mine area study indicated, and suggested that our understanding of release and transport of arsenic in this environment is incomplete.
