Open relationship - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An open relationship denotes a relationship (usually between two people) in which participants are free to take other partners; where the couple making this agreement is married, it is an open marriage.
Some relationships permit sex outside the primary relationship, but not love (cf swinging); such relationships are open, but not polyamorous.
However, there is enough overlap between the two concepts that 'open relationship' is sometimes used as a catch-all substitute when speaking to people who may not be familiar with 'polyamory'.

Open marriage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An open marriage is a marriage where both parties agree to permit sexual relationships for one or both outside the marriage, without regarding this as sexual infidelity.
Open marriage can be regarded as a broad spectrum of relationship types between strictly monogamous marriages and polyamory (a formal or committed relationship with more than one person).
Open marriage is not the same thing as polygamy, where sexual relationships are kept entirely within the parties to the marriage.

Open relationships made their public debut in the 1960s' sexual revolution when extra-relational affairs such as "swinging" were thriving and Western civilisation was shifted from repression to promiscuity.
In essence, couples who favour open relationships are after "a loving relationship … commitment and companionship for a lifetime" "(But) sexual fidelity is very challenging or difficult for them and (they) also want variety and pleasure," she say.
For open relationships to succeed they should be underpinned by honesty and a commitment level that surpasses the commitment the couple have for casual partners.

Which is more "normal" to you - someone having an affair or an open relationship?
Relationships (open, monogamous or points in-between) based on openness & honesty are much more healthy.
I think if an open relationship works for a couple and they are in full agreement and there is no jealousy or hidden feelings of resentment it can be perfectly "normal".
Fluffball - among my friends there are so many people with open relationships (and doing polyamory) that sometimes the folks who decide to be monogamous have a tough time - not because they're consciously pressured but because they end up having to question the decision so much because they're going against the grain.

B&P: Qualities of Successful Open Relationships
lthough many therapists argue that any relationship that is open signifies underlying personal or marital problems, there is plenty of evidence that this is not necessarily the case.
Thereafter, whenever that relationship is seen as being threatened or in jeopardy, not only do jealousy and possessiveness ensue, but the person finds they are at the mercy of factors they can't control.
At the same time—and this is important—both partners in an open relationship must be totally committed to maintain the primary relationship.

Regarding open relationships in general though, I agree with a friend of mine "Two wives - twice as much problems", but if everybody agrees and you are prepared to put that much energy into your romantic/sexual relationship, I think it does not differ from monogamous relationships.
I think that in the days post-incest as a social norm, there is no duty to marry your brother's wife instead of marrying any other widow, and since as a culture children are not seen as a dwindling commodity and women are not an inferior race, there is no need for that either.
Open relationships are a bizarre situation, and one which I have had a rather surreal bunch of experiences with...my best (male) friend M has a long standing girlfriend A...they are deeply in love, practically live together and seem to be a fairy story couple.

 Do Open Relationships Work?
To suggest that sexually open relationships are not necessarily only a lifestyle choice, but may reflect fears of intimacy and commitment, is regarded by some as tantamount to dismissing gay relationships or, even worse, pathologizing gay men.
An open relationship can be a way for a gay man to defend against exposing his need for closeness and nurturance from his partner, and to protect himself from possible rejection.
A common rational for why gay men choose to go outside their primary relationship for sex is that after a certain amount of time the sex is not just as hot as it used to be.

In other words, if a woman is interested in a relationship with a new man, her husband has the power to veto that relationship before it starts, for any reason.
Initiating a sexual relationship is opening a door to many possibilities, and often secondary relationships grow into something else which does not fit neatly into the confines of this model.
Instead of a couple having priority and control in the relationship, all relationships are considered primary, or have the potential of becoming primary.
