Open set - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Note also that "open" is not the opposite of "closed" (a closed set is the complement of an open set).
First, there are sets which are both open and closed (called clopen sets); in R and other connected spaces, only the empty set and the whole space are clopen, while the set of all rational numbers smaller than √2 is clopen in the rationals.
(Specifically: the union of open sets is open, the finite intersection of open sets is open, and in particular the empty set and X itself are open.) Such a family T of subsets is called a topology on X, and the members of the family are called the open sets of the topological space (X,T).

In topology and related branches of mathematics, a closed set is a set whose complement is open.
In mathematics, the interior of a set S consists of all points which are intuitively not on the edge of S. A point which is in the interior of S is an interior point of S. The notion of interior is in many ways dual to the notion of closure.
Also, there are sets which are neither open nor closed, such as (0,1] in R. This generalises the metric space definition: If you start with a metric space and define open sets as before, then the family of all open sets will form a topology on the metric space.

 PlanetMath: open set
Using the properties of these open sets we arrive at the usual definition of a topological space using open sets, which is equivalent to the above definition.
A non-metric topology would be the finite complement topology on infinite sets, in which a set is called open, if its complement is finite.

 Set Theory
The language of set theory, in its simplicity, is sufficiently universal to formalize all mathematical concepts and thus set theory, along with Predicate Calculus, constitutes the true Foundations of Mathematics.
Rather, sets are introduced either informally, and are understood as something self-evident, or, as is now standard in modern mathematics, axiomatically, and their properties are postulated by the appropriate formal axioms.
For instance, it is desirable to have the “set of all integers that are divisible by number 3,” the “set of all straight lines in the Euclidean plane that are parallel to a given line”, the “set of all continuous real functions of two real variables” etc.

 XML Information Set (Second Edition)
The information set of an XML document is defined to be the one obtained by parsing it according to the rules of the specification whose version corresponds to that of the document.
An information set corresponding to a real document will necessarily be consistent in various ways; for example the [in-scope namespaces] property of an element will be consistent with the [namespace attributes] properties of the element and its ancestors.
This may not be true of an information set constructed by other means; in such a case there will be no XML document corresponding to the information set, and to serialize it will require resolution of the inconsistencies (for example, by outputting namespace declarations that correspond to the namespaces in scope).

 Inconsistent Mathematics
Given a supposition which seems to be conceivable, namely that whatever happens or is true, happens or is true on an open set of (spacetime) points, one has that the logic of dynamically possible paths is open set logic, that is to say intuitionist logic, which supports incomplete theories par excellence.
This is because the natural account of the negation of a proposition in such a space says that it holds on the largest open set contained in the Boolean complement of the set of points on which the original proposition held, which is in general smaller than the Boolean complement.
This is because the natural account of the negation of a proposition, namely that it holds on the smallest closed set containing the Boolean negation of the proposition, means that on the overlapping boundary both the proposition and its negation hold.

 Cantor Set (PRIME)
Consequently, the Cantor set is a perfect set in the topologist’s sense.
Finally, since any open neighborhood of any point of the Cantor set contains an open set which is disjoint from the Cantor set, we have that the Cantor set is nowhere dense.
The Cantor set is an instructively simple example of a fractal, demonstrating that our geometrical intuitions about space (even such simple spaces as the unit interval) can fail to capture much of the deep structure inherent in those very intuitions.

Scotsman.com Sport - Golf - Open set for Old Course in 2010
THE Open is poised to return to St Andrews in 2010, when the Royal and Ancient will celebrate the 150th anniversary of a championship which started at Prestwick in 1860 with Willie Park holding off a challenge from Old Tom Morris.
Now that the Open generates in excess of £50 million for the local economy, the incentive for South Ayrshire council to start this project forthwith couldn't be clearer.
Watched by crowds of 223,000 - the second largest in Open history - the popularity of St Andrews with the public was underlined by the success of the championship.

 Set theory
Bolzano gave examples to show that, unlike for finite sets, the elements of an infinite set could be put in 1-1 correspondence with elements of one of its proper subsets.
By this stage, however, set theory was beginning to have a major impact on other areas of mathematics.
Analysis needed the set theory of Cantor, it could not afford to limit itself to intuitionist style mathematics in the spirit of Kronecker.

MAT246: Outline of Point Set Topology   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
A topological space is a set together with a collection of subsets, called the open sets, such that the union of any number of open sets is open, the intersection of a finite number of open sets is open, and the empty set and the entire space are both open.
Definition: In a topological space, a point x is a limit point of a subset S if every open set containing x intersects S in a point other than x (x may be in S but need not be).
Definition: the closure of a set is the union of the set and its set of limit points.

It is fairly clear that when combining two open sets (either via union or intersection) the resulting set is again open, and the same statement should be true for closed sets.
The basic open (or closed) sets in the real line are the intervals, and they are certainly not complicated.
The worst-case scenario for the open sets, in fact, will be given in the next result, and we will concentrate on closed sets for much of the rest of this chapter.

Study: Open Source Set to Grow in Asia/Pac
Open Source adoption among developers is expected to grow at a faster pace in the Asia Pacific region (APAC) than in North America.
One of the fundamental tenants of open source development is that developers contribute code back to the community, which is something that APAC developers apparently do more of as well.
Steve Fullmer, Evans Data APAC and North American analyst, said the trend in the enterprise space in North America is that greater use of Java corresponds clearly with a greater acceptance and use of open source resources.
