codecs [Video Wiki]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The best know non-proprietary open source container format is probably.OGG which would normally be used for theora video and vorbis audio althought it can contain any codec.
While DivX is closed source and is designed to run on the Windows operating system, XviD is open source and runs on multiple platforms, including Windows, Mac OS and GNU/Linux.
Open and free, Theora is a codec being developed by the Xiph.org Foundation as part of their Ogg project.

 Editorial:Codecs - Anime-Wiki.org
In the MS Windows sense, a codec is just a simple library that plugs into the operating system so that DirectShow and other simple WAPI-based media players have a way to decode and play back a number of varied formats for audio and video without the expentidure of writing decoders for these formats from scratch.
A Free, open source audio codec developed by the Xiph.org foundation, Vorbis has come out to the top to be one of the top codecs for low-bitrate applications (for 64Kib/sec and up) in quality, and, in many cases, speed.
Codecs that are today free could suddenly disappear or become too expensive for anyone not in a major video processing company to afford - barring entry to the market to startup companies and keeping the common man from making and releasing his own video.

Codec - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Codecs (in the modern, software sense) encode a stream or signal for transmission, storage or encryption and decode it for viewing or editing.
Codecs are often used in videoconferencing and streaming media applications.
There are lossless codecs as well, but for most purposes the almost imperceptible increase in quality is not worth the considerable increase in data size.

Democratizing the Archive: An Open Interface for Mediation - MetavidWiki
Open Secrets republishes their analysis for a small fee[33], this publication does not impede the availability of the source data[34].
The strict adherence to free and open source software may be a limiting factor for other projects which are not operating under the praxis of open source but seek to emulate portions of the metavid project.
The selection of theora is not designed to enforce open source purism on users of the archive; this would limit the accessibility and be contrary to the goals of the praxis we have adopted rather we aim to make the archive accessible as possible while not sacrificing transparency and accessibility to the archives construction.

 DivX (Linux Reviews)
It is one of several codecs commonly associated with ripping, where audio and video multimedia are transferred to a hard disk and transcoded.
The Microsoft codec, which originally required that the compressed output be put in an ASF file, was altered to allow other containers such as AVI.
An open source version of the codec—called OpenDivX®—was released by DivX in early 2001, and this version served as the basis for the open source Xvid codec, the source code of which is largely maintained by Xvid Solutions.

Active Streaming Format with Microsoft NetShow -- MIND September 1997
A number of codecs come preinstalled with Windows and any user who downloads and installs the NetShow Player helper application is given several more during installation, but you can't assume every user will have the codec they need to decode your ASF content.
The codec installation control's constructor determines whether the platform is Windows 95 or Windows NT and uses an appropriate mechanism to check for the presence of the Cinepak codec.
Under the Codecs tab you will see a list of the codecs used by the objects within the ASF data and whether the codecs are installed on your computer.

The first is a ported version of the open source cross-platform player, MPlayer, which is known for playing proprietary media-formats without having to pay license fees.
XBMC handles all codecs and containers normally supported by MPlayer (all FFmpeg supported codecs and also several external ones with the help of proprietary DLL-files: RealMedia, QuickTime, WMV9/WMA9, VP4/5/6), and the sources are synced at regular intervals.
This core support all the FFmpeg codecs, and in addition the MPEG-2 video codec, and the audio codecs DTS and AC3 (based on the open source libraries, libmpeg2, libdca, and liba52 respectively).

With open standards, media files can be viewed on windows, linux and the other unix varients, macos, someone will probably port a player to run on mobiles.
Open media formats such as Vorbis audio compression, xvid video and the OGG and OGM containers have the potential to ensure anyone can safely make and distribute multimedia content without worrying about licensing issues.

Free-Codecs.com :: Guides : What you need to know about codecs
A container format is a computer file format that can contain various types of data, compressed in a manner of standardized codecs.
The container file is used to be able to identify and interleave (set a value on how often the audio and video streams are "synchronized") the different data types.
Codecs may also be able to transcode from one digital format to another; for example, from PCM audio to MP3 audio.

This is a listing of open-source multimedia codecs and container formats.
That doesn't necessarily mean that further restrictions (such as software patents) don't exist for these codecs and formats, which is the case for many of them, like MP3.
Note that codec is software, not a format — for example, video produced with the XviD and FFmpeg MPEG-4 codecs is MPEG-4 ASP video.

Open Source and Free Software have so far failed to make inroads into the games industry, where intellectual property is still seen as essential for successful business.
In a co-operative open source or free software project, it is often difficult to match the resources of a well funded proprietary project, so an approach to development must be taken that ensures that most effective use can be made of the resources available, and work is reused wherever possible.

In response to the previous poster; from my understanding, when you play the same file using the xvid codec or using ffdshow there won't be much quality difference, because the quality is mainly determined by the way it was encoded, rather than the way you play it.
The main difference is that using the divx codec, or especially the xvid codec, to play a file, takes a lot of CPU time, whereas using ffdshow (which can decode anything that divx or xvid, or a host of other codecs created) to play the file seems to use a lot less processing power.
Additionally xvid is also open source and not bundled with a player or ads anything else.

In this container all sorts of video and audio streams can be stored, most of which (like Sorenson etc.) were licensed by apple in order to try and gain a certain level of exclusivity for their container format, urging people to use Macs for video editing and to use Quicktime for playback.
While Apple and Microsoft refuse to support competing codecs out of the box the open source community are trying to do just that thanks to the FFMpeg project and the various players which use this as the foundation for a multi-format, multi-codec player.
These two players are both based on the open source FFmpeg project which means that their codec capabilities are essentially identical so exactly which player you choose can often be a matter of preference rather than their ability to play the files.
