OpenBeOS is an open source effort to first recreate and then extend a most excellent, once-commercially-supported, closed-source, media-oriented desktop computer operating system called the Be Operating System (BeOS).
The goal of OpenBeOS R1 is to be source- and binary-compatible with BeOS R5.
Individual servers and APIs (known as kits) are being re-written from scratch by an enthusiastic team of volunteers who want to continue the revolution started by Be Inc. The kernel is being based on NewOS, a microkernel written by a former Be engineer, and adapted by a dedicated team of hard core programmers.

His decision to start OpenBeOS was a brave one, one that ignited a resurgence of positive feeling within the BeOS community and provided a project for people to rally behind.
A perfect example was the creation of the Glass Elevator mailing list, seen by some as a place to develop ideas for future releases (of an operating system not even in existence), it was viewed by the majority (and project leaders) as a way of removing large amounts of noise from the main project lists.
This is an area in which OpenBeOS has never excelled, primarily due to the team leaders it has chosen, as illustrated only too well by the comments made in the email thread at the start of this editorial.

Interview: Michael Phipps on OpenBeOS - OSNews.com
After Palm announced the buyout of Be, Inc.'s intellectual property & Technology and after some consequent indications from several key people that Palm has no interest at Be's products and especially in BeOS, a number of the BeOS believers tried to find a new home.
OpenBeOS (OBOS for its friends) consists from a number of BeOS developers who are trying to recreate the BeOS Kits in a form of a new, complete and open source Operating System that has source and if possible binary compatibility with BeOS 5.
You can subscribe to their developer's mailing list by sending an email to openbeos-request@freelists.org with 'subscribe' in the Subject field or by logging into the web interface at FreeLists.

I don't really care if OpenBeOS makes it on the desktop, and that's an amazingly difficult place to get a new operating system going, but as a server I would be freaking ecstatic to have BeOS as a viable server platform again.
In other words; you're foolish if you make any business decisions based on the slightly fermented mental ramblings of a developer who is rarely, if ever, told what's really going on.

Haiku (operating system) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Haiku, formerly known as OpenBeOS, is an open source project dedicated to the re-creation and continuation of the Be Operating System on x86 and PowerPC based computers.
The development project began as "OpenBeOS" in 2001 following the purchase of Be by Palm, Inc. and the subsequent discontinuation of BeOS.
This move left BeOS users without a viable upgrade path and BeOS developers with programs stranded on an unsupported platform.

My reluctance finally changed when Be was officially sold and it was clear that BeOS itself was not going to be developed any further and Yellowtab's Zeta didn't look as promising as it does now (and it's still not out).
Since all the other operating systems (by that time I had tried a few) didn't meet my high standards, OpenBeOS was for me the logical way to take the future of BeOS in hand.
I joined the team along with Bruno G. Albuquerque (also known as BGA), and have never regretted it; I am working with the smartest and nicest programmers that I have known for a long time.
