OpenContent's only excuse for existing is to "facilitate the prolific creation of freely available, high-quality, well-maintained Content." This Content can then be used in an infinity of ways, restricted only by the imagination of the user.
OpenContent is freely available for modification, use, and redistribution under a license similar to those used by the Open Source / Free Software community.
Finally, the license insures that if someone else bases a work on OpenContent, that the resultant work will be made available as OpenContent as well.

 What is Open Content?
OpenContent describes content of any sort - written, visual, audio, or other - that is meant to be free for re-use and re-transmission by anyone for any purpose.
The caveats are that attribution to the original author must be made, the OpenContent license must be distributed with the content, and you may not charge money simply for the original content, assuming you have not modified it or provided an additional value in some way.
OC is intended to make information more freely available to people who can use it, thereby speeding up the dissemination of information to the masses.

Open content - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is possible that the first documented case of Open Content was with the Royal Society, where they aspired toward information sharing across the globe as a public enterprise.
The words "open content" were first put together in this context by David Wiley, then a graduate student at Brigham Young University, who founded the OpenContent project and put together the first content-specific (non-software) license in 1998 with input from Eric Raymond, Tim O'Reilly, and others.
Like the debate between the titles "open source" and "free software", some open content materials can also be described as free content, although technically they describe different things.

What now seems to be the end of OpenContent should in fact have been a transformation.
This could merely be seen as an acknowledgement of their outstanding problems: unlike the GNU GPL and its maintenance and support through the Free Software Foundation and Columbia University law professor Eben Moglen, opencontent.org neither had institutional support nor legal expertise for its licenses, both of which Creative Commons has in abundance.
By publicly stalling OpenContent and its licenses, Wiley failed to provide a sensible and smooth upgrade path from the Open Content website and licenses to their equivalents at Creative Commons.
