Source code (C, ASM) for OpenDOS 7.01 is free for evaluation, educational and non-profit use (see Enhanced DR-DOS, next article, for download location).
Source code is also available, with utilities to aid in patching the original OpenDOS 7.01 source.
This variant of OpenDOS 7.02 provides a full DOS under Caldera OpenLinux with DOSEMU, which it configures.

With OpenDOS 7.01 the very efficient NWCACHE (which can dynamically lean its memory to other DOS applications when running into low memory conditions) also had a higher version number (1.02), but the file did not contain the fixes in the statistics overview, that have been implemented with Novell's update to NWCACHE 1.01.
It has been said, that there have been 19.000 downloads within the first three days of availability of OpenDOS 7.01, and about 2.000.000 copies sold until September 1997, which was more than being expected, and clearly is in the contrary to some 'trendsetters' saying DOS was dead.
OpenDOS is not FreeDOS, which is under the GPL.

 OpenDOS - Definition, explanation
OpenDOS is a free (though not free software) MS-DOS-compatible operating system.
The DOS product line was then sold off to a separate company, at that time known as Caldera Systems, owned by former Novell CEO Ray Noorda's investment firm The Canopy Group.
Caldera renamed Novell DOS to OpenDOS and initiated a program of source code release, to link OpenDOS to Caldera's other OS, OpenLinux, a distribution of the Linux Unix-like OS.

The apparently "unofficial OpenDOS" Web site is this link but it appears to not have been updated in some time.
The outcome was initially to post that portions of 8.1 were under GPL licence; but when told by email that sources also had to be distributed as well and other conditions of that license, DRDOS.COM apparently removed all references on their site to 8.1 altogether.
As for OpenDOS 7.01 or 7.02: since SCO (formerly Caldera) does not own DR-DOS, their Web site in 2006 has no files or refernences to it.

Digital Research produced a compatible variant known as "DR-DOS", which was eventually taken over (after a buyout of Digital Research) by Novell.

Subsequently, you can use sys (if you already run DOS but want to change to OpenDOS), format (if you already have a DOS partition but want to make a clean start), or fdisk followed by format (if you have to make a DOS partition first) to continue.
OpenDOS and the DOS utilities as provided here are essentially freeware (except for the shareware pk[un]zip).
In my experience, MSDOS appears to be more stable than OpenDOS in the case of shared drives with Linux.

DOS is free and on the Internet after Caldera today posted its OpenDOS operating system on its Web site.
The OpenDOS kernel source code will be posted next month, Caldera said in a press release.
The company said it intends OpenDOS to be a free platform for users in research and education, and added that it plans to provide a budget-priced DOS integration environment for users of OpenLinux, it's popular Internet development platform.
