OpenDarwin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The goal of the OpenDarwin project, founded in April 2002, is to create an independent branch of the Darwin operating system that increases collaboration between Apple developers and the open source community.
Apple benefits from the project because development in OpenDarwin is often incorporated into Darwin releases; and the open source community benefits since it is given complete control over its own operating system.
The OpenDarwin developers use a version control system called CVS to manage changes to the OpenDarwin source code.

Open source refers to projects that are open to the public and which draw on other projects that are freely available to the general public.
Atomic operations, spinlocks, critical sections, mutexes and serializing tokens are all possible methods that can be used to prevent concurrent access.
Currently, OpenDarwin runs on x86 (Intel and AMD) based computers, as well as PowerPC based machines, both single processor and SMP models.

Paste number 691: opendarwin faq (work in progress)
OpenDarwin in its current state is not a fully-featured operating system that is recommended to be deployed on production machines.
There are those coming from OS X looking to learn more about the core of their operating system and find out why things work as they do, look at source to help them better understand what's going on under the hood so they can improve their products, and so on.
In the long-term, we'd love to see OpenDarwin up to par with the rest of the BSD family, so that a person of sound mind would be perfectly able to choose it as a web server or desktop machine.

The mission of the OpenDarwin project is to increase the practical use of Apple's open source Darwin releases, to coordinate and increase participation of the community in Darwin development, to innovate and explore new technologies while still remaining relevant to the mainstream computing environments that Apple provides.
Many OpenDarwin members are either Apple employees or committers to Apple's CVS repository, who have an active interest in merging technologies from OpenDarwin.org into Darwin and Mac OS X releases.
With OpenDarwin, project members have greater latitude in producing incremental updates or interim releases of Darwin.

Jordan Hubbard: It seems that most of the developers in the OpenDarwin community are currently focused primarily on just getting applications ported in their "vanilla" form, though quite a number of optimizations are certainly of interest and may be undertaken at some point.
