  ONLamp.com -- What Is OpenDocument
If OpenDocument Format does not launch the most important worldwide software standards battle, then it will at least provide the very best theater for the citizenry to chide, heckle, and throw tomatoes on the stage--as the established software vendor cajoles its old and new customers back into deep dependence on a single vendor.
OpenDocument Format (ODF) is a file format for office documents that is available to users of a growing list of software applications.
The OASIS OpenDocument Format for Office Applications Technical Committee (OASIS ODF TC) is responsible for making changes to the format, keeping it technically up-to-date, and permitting it to evolve with innovations in document technology that will certainly occur in the future.

 Everybody's Guide to OpenDocument
A number of factors guarantee that OpenDocument files always will be usable: the number of Oasis members, their combined experience, their commitment to keep OpenDocument free from restrictions and its submission for approval to the International Standards Organizations.
Therefore, OpenDocument users will not need to spend much money and effort to migrate their files from one program to another if the one they currently run becomes too expensive, slow or cumbersome to use.
OpenDocument has all it needs to level the playing field in the productivity software industry, currently dominated by Microsoft Office, and guarantee long-term availability of digital records.

Why OpenDocument Won (and Microsoft Office Open XML Didn’t)
OpenDocument has been developed and is maintained by a vendor-neutral body (OASIS); OASIS is even authorized to submit its specifications straight to ISO.
Microsoft’s claim that OpenDocument is “unnecessarily exclusive” is nonsense; the shoe is on the other foot.
Some OpenDocument implementations are available at no cost (particularly OpenOffice.org and KDE KOffice) and have a licensing structure that allows that to continue that way indefinitely.

LinuxElectrons - Novell Reaffirms Its Commitment to the OpenDocument Format
OpenDocument is a standardized, XML-based file format specification for office applications.
OpenDocument files can be opened by any OpenDocument-compliant application regardless of language, freeing users from the shifting product directions of any one vendor.
"True open standards, like OpenDocument, are subject to public inspection and contribution and are unencumbered by property rights and the individual agendas of specific vendors," said Jack Messman, chairman and CEO of Novell.

PlexNex: What is OpenDocument...Again?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
OpenDocument (sometimes called “ODF”) is a file format for office documents which is available to users of a growing list of software applications.
It is the OASIS OpenDocument Technical Committee (the “OASIS ODF TC”) that is responsible for making changes to the format, to continue to keep it technically up to date and permit it to evolve with innovations in document technology which are certain to occur in the future.
OpenDocument, by being openly developed and having no impediments to its usage or access, provides an excellent solution to this problem of control by offering an open standard data format for use in all kinds of software -- free as well as commercial.

OpenDocument Alliance to fight looming 'digital Dark Age'
OpenDocument is an XML-based file format that is short for the OASIS Open Document Format for Office Applications.
The aim of the alliance is to use a truly open standard file format like OpenDocument that enables governments and their constituents to use, access and store documents, records and information both today and in the future.
But by using open standards like OpenDocument, Phipps said, a standard base line could be created within the industry that would eliminate royalty fees for viewing documents as well as the vendor license lock-in that is widespread today.

OpenDocument has been designed as a package concept, enabling it to be used as a default file format for office applications with no increase in file size or loss of data integrity.

From Open Source to Open Standard: The OASIS OpenDocument Format
That is, an OpenDocument package file may contain streams that are not specified by the OpenDocument specification, and therefore may contain extensions to the OpenDocument format.
Other benefits of OpenDocument packages are that they support compression and also allow images to be saved in their original binary format, which, given the number of tools that support these formats, should be seen as an advantage rather than a disadvantage.
OpenDocument defines documents that are stored within a package as well as documents that are stored as a plain or flat XML file.

 FSF - OpenDocument Massachusetts hearing
Yesterday's hearing at the Massachusetts State House was clearly an attempt to delay adoption of OpenDocument Format (ODF) --- delivering a swipe at Peter Quinn, CIO and Director of the state's Information and Technology Division.
It was fairly clear from the hearing that the Senator's aim is to delay and quash OpenDocument from being adopted.
I think there's some merit to the statement that there are many people who don't use the bells and whistles of technologies and I'm not so sure there aren't other ways of doing it.

Is OpenDocument an Open Standard? Yes!
For example, OpenDocument supports Unicode/ISO 10646 characters (whose purpose is to support the characters of all languages), Ruby text (important in supporting some Asian languages), and text written from right to left (important in supporting Arabic and Hebrew).
In 2004, Europe formally asked in very strong language that Microsoft participate in OpenDocument development; while it was an observer on the technical committee for a long while, and is part of OASIS, Microsoft never chose to become actively involved with this standard.
The OpenDocument development process had no such problem; the rules in placed allowed anyone to propose changes, even if they forced any or all vendors to change their implementations.

Frankly, if support for OpenDocument isn't forthcoming from the Redlers, it will be forthcoming from the community after Mellel's XML file format eventuates, so the question isn't as important as it sounds.
OpenDocument is based on XML and is specific to productivity suite-type apps including word processors.
The OpenDocument standardization process also included many document users, especially those with the need to handle complex documents or to be able to retrieve documents for long periods of time after their development.

OpenDocument is an XML-based format developed under the standards group OASIS, or the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards.
