ILM developed the OpenEXR format in response to the demand for higher color fidelity in the visual effects industry.
OpenEXR images can be annotated with an arbitrary number of attributes, e.g., with color balance information from a camera.
OpenEXR, Industrial Light and Magic and ILM are trademarks and service marks of Lucasfilm Ltd.; all associated intellectual property is protected by the laws of the United States and other countries.

Notes: OpenEXR is a high dynamic-range (HDR) image file format developed by Industrial Light and Magic for use in computer imaging applications.
The OpenEXR software distribution includes a library for reading and writing OpenEXR files; a math library with support for matrices, 2d- and 3d-transformations, and solvers for linear/quadratic/cubic equations; and a Half C++ class for manipulating 16-bit floating-point numbers as if they were a built-in C++ datatype.
The OpenEXR Half format is compatible with the 16-bit FP "half" datatype in Nvidia's Cg graphics language.

OpenEXR also supports several lossless compression methods (PIZ, ZIP, RLE), which can achieve compression ratios of about 2:1 for images with film grain.
When reading an OpenEXR file into a jit.matrix object, these channels will be mapped to sequential planes.

PCQuest : Technology : Visual FX with Openexr
Openexr is a imaging format developed specifically for the VFX industry.
Because of the lack of an IEEE specification for a 16-bit format, Openexr uses a ‘half’ format that is identical to half data type in NVidia’s Cg graphics language.
Openexr also allows for including additional data into the image, camera position, view direction or exposure settings etc. If a particular image viewer does not understand the extra data it can safely ignore it, without missing out on any imageinformation.

OpenEXR, a previously proprietary file format developed and used by ILM, defines a flexible, efficient, and extensible image file format which includes a new, high-precision, 16-bit half-float image description that offers a greater dynamic range than existing 8- and 10-bit file formats.
We are happy to be able to continue this tradition with the release of the OpenEXR plug-in, which will provide 3ds max users with a flexible format for working with full dynamic range imagery," said Steve Blackmon, CTO of SplutterFish.
The OpenEXR plug-in for 3ds max and Autodesk VIZ is currently available from SplutterFish and can be downloaded, free-of-charge, from the company's website, Splutterfish LLC.

Filtering via the shader will still require the same number of samples as well, so the bandwidth utilisation in comparison to FP filtering is the same.
But I do know OpenEXR is just a file format in storing HDR data.

“The OpenEXR file format is a better digital representation of film because it has a dynamic range of over 30 f-stops without loss of precision, and an additional 10 f-stops at the low end with minimal loss of precision.
Most of the previous 8-bit file formats only have the dynamic range of around 7 to 10 f-stops and cannot accurately reproduce images with extreme contrast.” ILM originally implemented its own extended dynamic range file format EXR in the summer of 2000.
