OpenLDAP offers several mechanisms to protect the security of the data it stores.
Begin by generating indices, which are database tables that can be used to track down a record much faster than by looking though the entire database.

The first step to making IBM authentication work with openLDAP is to apply the above patch to the source for a 2.0.23 server.

There are few tutorials on how to accomplish using LDAP for authentication, and I found them to be difficult to understand or incomplete, and as a result some research and testing was done to setup LDAP-based authentication on Mandrakelinux.
For some strange reason, even if you have OpenLDAP, on the server, defined to use "files ldap dns" for host information, the LDAP server is not referenced for doing reverse-IP lookups on the server.
Some of them are slightly dated, but a lot of the information is still valid; you may just have to pick and choose what information you apply to anything you wish to accomplish.

OpenLDAP for Win32 - Software - Lucas Bergman
The OpenLDAP section of this website receives at least 200 unique visitors every day, more than 6000 per month; together, we can make a serious difference.
In addition, the OpenLDAP hackers have made Windows a first-class supported platform for the OpenLDAP server, if not one quite as well tested as Unix-like systems.
So, I've taken this on strictly as a volunteer, and my job is no longer “porting” OpenLDAP so much as it is making it easier for Windows developers to get started and for Windows users to get binaries without a bunch of hassle.

The central file of OpenLDAP is slapd.conf, which usually is located in /usr/local/etc/openldap/slapd.conf (I prefer to install the configuration file in /etc/openldap).

Slurpd would overflow an internal buffer if the command-line argument used with the -t or -r flags was too long, or if the name of a file for which it attempted to create an advisory lock was too long.

OpenLDAP v2.0 is a LOT more picky about the order of the ACL's than the 1.3 version(s) where (where my config/access file originates from).
To be able to use GSSAPI/Kerberos V with replication, we will need to create a service key that we will use for authentication and extract that into a keyfile.

 [RHSA-2002:014-07] Updated OpenLDAP packages available
Problem description: Versions of OpenLDAP from 2.0.0 through 2.0.19 do not check permissions using access control lists when a user attempts to remove an attribute from an object in the directory by replacing its values with an empty list.
Because schema checking is still enforced, a user can only remove attributes which the schema does not require the object to possess.
These packages update OpenLDAP to version 2.0.21 which is not vulnerable to this problem.

 LDAP Account Sync
The back-perl OpenLDAP backend (iPlanet® uses their plugin API) is used on both the NT/2000 server and on the main OpenLDAP server (if they are different) to modify NT/2000 accounts when accounts are modified in the directory, or vice-versa.
By using the OpenLDAP Replication system, all changes from the master OpenLDAP server are replicated into the OpenLDAP + backPerl Win32 binaries to make changes to the Windows Active Directory.
The goal is to more closely export the OpenLDAP C and C++ APIs as a PERL extension.

LDAP is a set of protocols for accessing directory services (usually phone book style information, but other information is possible) over the Internet, similar to the way DNS (Domain Name System) information is propagated over the Internet.
Note that the RedHat openldap package takes a while to build and a lot of disk space.
