OpenLaszlo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
OpenLaszlo is an open source platform for the development and delivery of web applications with a usable human interface (sometimes called Rich Internet Applications) on the World Wide Web.
The OpenLaszlo server is a Java servlet that compiles LZX applications into executable binaries for targeted run-time environments.
OpenLaszlo was originally developed and released under the Common Public License by Laszlo Systems.

OpenLaszlo | the premier open-source platform for rich internet applications
OpenLaszlo is an open source platform for creating zero-install web applications with the user interface capabilities of desktop client software.
OpenLaszlo programs are written in XML and JavaScript and transparently compiled to Flash.
An OpenLaszlo application can be as short as a single source file, or factored into multiple files that define reusable classes and libraries.

The OpenLaszlo server then compiles the XML and JavaScript into.swf files, which run in the Flash player.) I'd say I'm about half through my quick, dirty, non-functioning prototype.
Laszlo Systems, the people who created (and open-sourced) OpenLaszlo have built a commercial email application called Laszlo Mail, which is (or will be) used by Earthlink (yeah, the big ISP with millions of customers).
A lot of the components in OpenLaszlo also allow you to give them a percentage for their width and height, and they will act as you expect them to.

Web clients fatten up with OpenLaszlo
OpenLaszlo is a rich client application architecture that uses Macromedia Flash as a deployment vehicle.
OpenLaszlo is backed by an optional server-side container, the OpenLaszlo Server, which provides extended integration and support for remote procedure calls, Web services, and transcoding services (which help to do things like stream lengthy MP3 files to the user).
One of the cool features of the OpenLaszlo Server is that by simply placing a Laszlo file on a server with the OpenLaszlo Server component, you are able to browse to the page and see the result, because it is compiled and cached on the fly by the server.

Marc’s Voice » Blog Archive » OpenLaszlo gets more real
OpenLaszlo needs to be easy to start hacking with and quick to see results - no J2EE servlet config, edit, compile and publish needs to be super simple and options beyond Flash in the browser would make OpenLaszlo much, much more interesting.
OpenLaszlo on the desktop, OpenLaszlo on your devices, OpenLaszlo on your TiVO, XBox360, etc. Runtimes, codecs, and file formats will come and go - open platforms, formats and frameworks are the glue that will allow our children and grand-children to deploy our personal, social and cultural applications/experiences long after we’re gone.
OpenLaszlo does begin to provide a good open, expressive, GUI/client application platform/framework that doesn’t have to die at the whims of a corporation and it’s shareholders.

 OpenLaszlo 3.2cr1 Release Notes
OpenLaszlo 3.2cr1 is a community release, giving you a chance to preview the new functionality that will be released shortly as part of OpenLaszlo 3.2.
It is intended as an easy way to contribute code that doesn't have the level of documentation, testing, or API review that is required in other directories, or that is simply contributed too late in the release cycle to place elsewhere.
OpenLaszlo now includes a partial implementation of this specification, with some limitations that depend on the target runtime.

The best way to ensure that trust, of course, it to make OpenLaszlo really, truly open; to make it abundantly clear to potential developers that Laszlo Systems is not self-dealing, not trying to control the platform for its own benefit.

Marc’s Voice » Blog Archive » Great OpenLaszlo Review by Greg Yardley
The whole point of OpenLaszlo is to insulate you from platform dependencies.
The fact that it uses Flash today is as incidental as the fact that GCC supported the proprietary Vax instruction set in its early days — that was what was popular at the time.
But a C compiler is meant to insulate you from the instruction set, not tie you to it, just as OpenLaszlo is meant to insulate you from Flash or whatever runtime it targets.

Netzstaub: Building OpenLaszlo applications using Common Lisp
OpenLaszlo is a programming language / development framework to build web applications based on javascript and XML.
The application is compiled to a flash swf file by the OpenLaszlo compiler, and can be deployed in a static way (copying the swf file to a web server), or using the OpenLaszlo middleware, which can convert HTTP calls from the flash file to Java calls, cache resources, proxy stuff, etc...
The approach is pretty neat, the GUI is slick, quite a lot of documentation and demo applications are available, there are no portability problems across browsers (once you've got flash, but that runs almost everywhere).
