OpenNAP - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
OpenNAP is a piece of free software that replicates the functionality of the once-popular Napster peer-to-peer filesharing server.
OpenNAP uses a free Napster-like protocol with extended functionality, is released under the GNU General Public License, and runs under Unix-like operating systems, such as Linux, Mac OS X, and under Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
The OpenNap project is hosted at SourceForge (Note: This site has not been updated since November 15, 2001.).

 OpenP2P.com: OpenNap Use Crashes
OpenNap servers may be linked in such a way that they report numbers that reflect multiple views of a single population.
OpenNap, unlike the various facets of it commercial brethren, is truly an open source file-sharing community.
In fact, although it appears they were unusable at the time, MusicCity's OpenNap servers continued to appear "alive" to our monitor after April 22, so the data do not show a sharp drop associated with their shutdown.

Make sure to unzip them in the *parent* directory of OpenNap, so that the directory tree looks like this: zlib/ opennap-0.xx/ NOTE: you DO NOT want to unzip zlib in the *same* directory as the OpenNap source, because the project file will not be able to find them there.
Opennap attempts to reduce the risk by allowing you to specify the default uid/gid to run as.
After setting the max file descriptors, opennap calls setuid() and setgid() to drop root privilege (by default it uses user nobody, group nobody).

Slyck News - OpenNap — A Domain of P2P Community
During OpenNap’s peak in February 2002, the RIAA on behest of its member companies began sending “Cease and Desist” notices to all sizable networks.
Although development around OpenNap is not as fast paced as eMule or LimeWire, this community is far from being a ghost town.
OpenNap is perhaps one of the few P2P communities that retain the original communal nature that accompanied Napster.

Opennap NG 0.49 directly bases on really old 0.45 source version (and not newer 0.46).
The last common base version is Opennap NG 0.46 from November 23rd, 2002, which was a major bugfix release.
Opennap NG 0.49 doesn't contain a lot of bug fixes and enhancements from the 0.46 version, such as Friends status, Elite protected networks, etc.

OpenNap is a free Open Source effort to create a version of the proprietary Napster server.
After a long time of mostlly stagnancy with only tiny improvements, Opennap NG 0.49 is the latest result of major development efforts since early 2005, to keep the spirit alive (or try to revive it a bit, rather).

By default, OpenNap will look for its configuration files in: C:\opennap-ng Win32 platforms (Win 9x/NT/2k/XP) -or- /usr/local/etc/opennap-ng Unix platforms Other stateful files (users, bans, channels, etc) are in: c:\opennap-ng Win32 platforms (Win 9x/NT/2k/XP) -or- /usr/local/var/opennap-ng Unix platforms If you wish to install OpenNap in another location, simply enter the new directory when `opennap_setup' prompts you.
However, in order for opennap to find this config file, you will have to tell it where the config file is when you start the server.
You do this by specifying the -c command line option as such: opennap -c PATH where PATH is the _full_ path to the config file.

Number of OpenNap servers declines - [Shareware Music Machine News]
The number of OpenNap servers fell by over 75% in the period from late February to late April 2001, according to a study by Clip2.
Clip2's study of the OpenNap network -- a network of index servers and peers that work similarly to those operated and distributed by Napster -- puts a bullet in the Napigator option.
It is likely that RIAA action has lead to OpenNaps being closed after receiving attention or simply from the fear of attracting too much heat.

 PCWorld.com - Napster Alternatives
OpenNap, short for Open Source Napster, works (as the name implies) just like Napster: You log in to a single, centralized server that mediates your search for a file.
The upside is that the less-centralized OpenNap system prevents the servers from being shut down quickly; the downside is that your search results on one server will suffer due to the fractured nature of the OpenNap peer-to-peer music community.
WinMX: One of the biggest problems with OpenNap applications is trying to decide which servers to search on.

What's not clear is whether the RIAA was able to determine that the OpenNap users targeted were definitely trading in copyrighted materials.
An OpenNap server operator that CNET interviewed said that he would stop listing songs by artists like Metallica and Dr. Dre to stay off the RIAA hit list.
I'd guess that OpenNap would count as a server, so even if users of a server aren't trading copyrighted materials cable companies would have a right to shut down such services.

Peer-to-peer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One user uploads a file to the FTP server, then many others download it, with no need for the uploader and downloader to be connected at the same time.
Some networks and channels, such as Napster, OpenNAP, or IRC @find, use a client-server structure for some tasks (e.g., searching) and a peer-to-peer structure for others.
Networks such as Gnutella or Freenet use a peer-to-peer structure for all purposes, and are sometimes referred to as true peer-to-peer networks, although Gnutella is greatly facilitated by directory servers that inform peers of the network addresses of other peers.
