XML Matters: XML for word processors
The anticipated transparent interoperability between KOffice (KWord) and OpenOffice.org (Writer) is an example of this.
Similarly, KWord is part of the KOffice suite (which is itself part of the overall KDE project); KOffice contains even more components than does OpenOffice.org -- adding flowcharting, raster image editing, charting, and other applications.
And most interestingly for this column, AbiWord, KWord, and Writer all use XML for their native document formats.

KWord and Writer, the word processor in OpenOffice, are also open source and capable of opening and saving text files as Word documents.

There are also versions of AbiWord for Linux/GTK, BeOS, BSD, QNX, and Unix, making it the open source word processor that runs on the most number of operating systems.

 Printing FAQ
For example, in RedHat 9, the printer setup utility is on the OO menu -- click on the red hat in the lower left, click on OpenOffice, and there printer setup is right along side writer, calc, impress, and the rest.
OpenOffice.org (and also other PPD-aware applications or print filters) inserts printer-specific PostScript code into the PostScript output file according to the definitions of the options in the PPD file, so that the printer prints the document in the way the user has configured it by the options in the "Properties" dialog.
This method is the quickest, but won't work if your USB drivers are compiled into the kernel, the printer driver has been renamed, or the modules simply are not loaded.

The Open Office folk are too fond of the word "issue" and the Web site "insists" that all public communications refer to the project as Openoffice.org, not OpenOffice or Open Office – plus the logo belongs to Sun, while the site and the project is also sponsored by Gnasherzilla.
Open Office is really a suite of different software including a spreadsheet, a drawing package, presentation software (Powerpointless) and other bits and bobs – for the purpose of this review I'm just going to look at the "Writer" function.
Open Office has got just about everything plus a little bit more, and it's fair to say that whoever you are and for whatever reason you use one of these word churners, you're unlikely to need all of them.

Similarly, some word processors are called "writer", such as OpenOffice.org Writer and Nisus Writer.
Writers' output frequently contributes to the cultural content of a society, and that society may value its writerly corpus -- or literature -- as an art much like the visual arts (see painting, sculpture, photography), music, craft and performance art (see: drama, theatre, opera, musical).
Accordingly, a writer in specialist mode may rank as a poet, novelist, composer, lyricist, playwright, mythographer, journalist, film scriptwriter, etc. (See also: creative writing, technical writing and academic papers).
