In his introduction to the Welsh National Opera’s celebratory 60th anniversary season programme Carlo Rizzi, their Music Director, declares that “we are bringing the best of Wales to the rest of the world — and the best of the world to Wales”.
Since opera began, composers have honoured, or pretended to honour, the principle that the music should serve the words, though, in reality, it is done more in the breach than the observance.
The real problem with this opera is that modern audiences find it hard to sit through three hours of repetitive recitative, and a plot that defies logic.

Opera Today : The Rake's Progress at Opera Australia
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – German writers Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s stylized 1928 masterpiece “The Threepenny Opera” is savagely cynical, sardonic, brittle and worldly wise—and wonderfully well-performed at the Odyssey Theater Ensemble, a tribute to savvy director Ron Sossi and a cast of 16 talented and eager performers.
The composer and librettists wrote a scene that was closely based on the horror of Hogarth’s picture, and expected it to look like it…the chorus, dressed in fl with a variety of white masks, occupied a kind of egg-box (or jury-box?) which stretched from wall to wall of the set.
It is the designs, however, that are best remembered; and, considering that the opera was inspired by a visual source, to be remembered for its visual appeal seems only logical.

PlaybillArts: News: Opera Australia Warns Subscribers of Graphic Violence in Upcoming Production
Opera Australia has sent a letter to 1,500 Sydney subscribers warning them of graphic violence in its upcoming production of Richard Mills's Batavia — and even offering them the choice of exchanging their tickets.
Batavia was commissioned by Opera Australia and the Melbourne Festival for the 2001 celebration of the country's centennial as a federation; it was revived at the Perth International Arts Festival in 2004.
Critical reception has been unusually warm for a new Australian opera: it won three Helpmann Awards (Australia's equivalent of the Oliviers); the Herald wrote that Mills "mobilises his generous vocal and instrumental forces with a sure hand"; andante.com suggested that the work might fairly be called the first Great Australian Opera.

Part of the opera’s timeless appeal hinges on the outlandish manner and relationships between the self-titled Bohemians, and leads Jamie Allen (as eleventh-hour replacement) and Miriam Gordon-Stewart play their parts of Rodolfo and Mimi exactly so, and with great sentiment in their love scenes.
Similarly, Andrea Licata (right) is a practiced exponent of opera and his direction from the orchestral pit has bags of sparkle and character in the music-making, catching the passion (if not the delicacy) of Puccini’s lyricism and supporting the on-stage action quite ably.
It was also a pleasant surprise to find guest chorus master Terry Edwards working with the Opera Australia Chorus, imparting his trademark incisive quality and teamwork with which he has established a formidable reputation with his own choral group, the London Voices.
