  Operant conditioning chamber
Skinner, its inventor) is an experimental apparatus used by psychologists to study operant conditioning in animals.
The structure forming the shell of a chamber is a three-dimensional box large enough to easily accommodate the organism (rat, pigeon, monkey, etc) serving as the subject in the research.
The other minimal requirement of a conditioning chamber is that it have a means of delivering a primary reinforcer[?] or unconditioned stimulus[?] like food or water.

 Operant conditioning
The phrase 'operant conditioning' draws out a crucial distinction from pavlovian conditioning, which Skinner termed 'respondent' - namely that respondent conditioning, like the dog's salivation or the knee-jerk, has neither much effect on the environment, nor is its occurrence changed by its effectiveness or ineffectiveness in the environment.
Operant conditioning, sometimes called "instrumental conditioning" or "instrumental learning", was first extensively studied by Edwin L. Thorndike[?] (1874-1949).
In contrast to Thorndike's puzzle boxes, Skinner introduced free operant[?] technique via the use of operant conditioning chamber.

 BEHAVIORISM, language and concepts
An operant response is a behavior that is modifiable by its consequences.
The chamber is connected to electronic equipment that records the animal's lever pressing or key pecking, thus allowing for the precise quantification of behavior.
A conditioned stimulus in Pavlovian conditioning is an initially neutral stimulus that is paired with the unconditioned stimulus.

Operant conditioning in insects - a test case
The occurrence of both operant and classical conditioning is well-attested in insects: there is much more data available than for the various phyla of worms.
In operant conditioning, the association was between its behaviour (B) and a "punishing" unconditioned stimulus (US); in classical conditioning, between a visual pattern on the cylindrical panorama (CS) and the US.
Whereas in the pure operant conditioning experiments, the fly had to restrict its range and continuously turn to one side to avoid the heat, in flight simulator mode, it simply had to keep its left and right yaw torque spikes within the safe zones.

 Abstracts of 1997 Conference Papers
Male Wistar rats were exposed to the same series of tandem FR 1 VI schedules in an operant conditioning chamber responding on a lever for.1ml of a.3M sucrose solution and in a running wheel responding on a lever for the opportunity to run for 30 s.
A conditional discrimination task followed reinforcers obtained from both alternatives in which a response to the red side-key was occasionally reinforced if the prior (sample) reinforcer was obtained from the dim alternative, and a response to the green side-key was occasionally reinforced if the sample reinforcer was obtained from the bright alternative.
Depending on the condition, the delay period was short, intermediate, or long, and the probability was correspondingly low, intermediate, or high, but in all cases the average terminal link IRI was 32 s.

 Carthage - Neuroscience - Research
At the 2000 annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience, they presented data involving a behavioral phenomenon known as learned irrelevance and the function of the hippocampus (Miller, Doherty, Chapleau, and Allen, SFN Abstracts, 2000).
While the SBP is not a classical conditioning task, uncorrelated presentation of the tone while rats are performing on a FR8 schedule leads to a strong retardation during SBP training.
Chapleau and Miller are currently working on a research project that is studying dopaminergic and serotonergic input to the hippocampus and the function of these neurotransmitter systems in encoding the irrelevant tone stimulus.

 Operant
In an operant conditioning chamber, the experimenter can present reinforcers, such as a piece of food for a hungry rat or pigeon, according to a preset pattern.
In an operant conditioning chamber, for example, a green light or a tone can be a signal to a rat that pressing the lever will be reinforced.
In discussing classical conditioning, we saw that conditioning may become generalized; that is, a CR may occur in response to stimuli that are similar to the one used in training.

 Operant Conditioning
In operant conditioning, an animal must first make a response; that response is usually preceded by a discriminative stimulus, and sometimes followed by a reinforcer.
Operant conditioning occurs when the association of response and reinforcer causes the animal to make the response again later in a similar situation. The discriminative stimulus signals the animal that a response at a given time is likely to be reinforced.
So, operant conditioning can be defined as a procedure in which a response followed by a stimulus recurs.

 Operant Conditioning
Operant conditioning is changes in behaviours, such as an increase or decrease in the frequency of occurance, due to the consequences of these behaviours (Nye, 1992).
It is important to understand the conditions under which a behaviour increases or decreases because we base our assumptions about people's attributes on observations of the frequency of the occurance of certain behaviours (Nye, 1992).
Secondary, or conditioned, reinforcers are stimuli that are originally neutral, but become reinforcers through their association with primary reinforcers.

 LEARNING AND SHAPING LABORATORY
Operant conditioning is the procedure where behavior is controlled by what happens after the behavior; that is, its consequences.  In other words what happens if an animal does X and is this result of behavior X desirable or not to the animal
Note that to tell whether a stimulus or event is reinforcing or not, I look at the effect on behavior and not at the stimulus.
Prior to "running" your rat in the operant conditioning chamber you will need to deprive your rat of food for 24 hours (Check with me before you do deprivation of this length of time).  You will also need to keep track of your rat's weight so the rat does not lose weight.

Measuring Behavior 2000: Zarcone et al.
Life Span Institute, University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS, U.S.A. Measurement of operant behavior in laboratory rodents is usually accomplished with a lever-switch ensemble that detects lever depressions of sufficient force to close the switch.
We have constructed a manipulandum that uses an isometric force transducer to measure the force of operant response as the mouse presses it nose against a smooth, flat disk.
Combining this manipulandum with an operant-conditioning chamber has allowed us to measure nose presses directly reinforced with food presentation (Fixed Ratio 1), as well as anticipatory nose presses made during signaled conditions prior to the reinforcement period.

Methodology in the Experimental Analysis of Behavior
While quite a bit of research in conditioning and learning is conducted using human subjects in applied settings, most of it is conducted using rats, pigeons and non-human primates (monkeys and apes) as subjects.
What operant conditioning experimentation is all about is the experimenter controls the conditions that confront the organism, records the resulting behavior, and compares this behavior to the behavior of organisms under other conditions, or this same organism before these conditioning were in effect.
If the basic goals of conditioning theory are viable, then knowing this past history (the reason for building it in) should allow the experimenter to predict what the pigeon will do in the future.

He placed a cat in an enclosed chamber and attached a vertical pole in the center of the compartment to a rope that passed over several pulleys.
Thorndike described this as an instrumental conditioning process because the pole tilting was instrumental in releasing the cat from the chamber and permitting access to a reward.
In operant behavior, typically no stimulus was presented before an operant response that “caused” the behavior to occur (ie, there was no conditioned stimulus).
