Pop music is also known for its ability to attract listeners through its versatile sound since it pulls from a plethora of musical influences.

 eIndieMusic - Pop
Pop music, is a subgenre of popular music.
Pop music may be distinguished from classical or art music and from folk music (Frith 2001, p.94) but since the term spans many rock, hip hop, rhythm and blues (RandB), country, dance and operatic pop acts, it is reasonable to say that "pop music" is a loosely defined category.
The term is also used in a derogatory manner by those who feel that pop acts lack any musically artistic meaning, or in lack of better terminology, represent a betrayal of the traditional sound of either the act themselves or the specific genre to which the act belongs.

Meets the Fair Young Ladies of Folkland - Gene Pitney - Song Listings
On Meets the Fair Young Ladies of Folkland, Gene Pitney puts aside the operatic pop grandeur that normally defined his recordings for a set of tunes that pursued folk and country styles with bare bones arrangements.
Songs like "Lyda Sue Whad'ya Do?" and "Those Eyes of Liza Jane" suffer because Pitney's vocals are too mannered to give the songs the sly comic touch they require.
Meets the Fair Young Ladies of Folkland is also a less compelling listen than Pitney's other albums because it trades the diverse genre blends and lush production of his straightforward pop output for a singular folk/country sound put forward with minimalist production.

Classic pop can be created by a singer momentarily falling in love with the track, but as a corollary, abstract, intellectually crafted pop dates itself by constantly reminding you of how and when it was created.

 Jackie Wilson
Elvis Presley was one of those who was mightily impressed by Wilson in the mid-'50s; he can be heard praising Jackie's on-stage cover of "Don't Be Cruel" in between-song banter during the Million Dollar Quartet session in late 1956.
Most of these were upbeat, creatively arranged marriages of pop and R&B that, in retrospect, helped set the stage both for '60s soul and for Gordy's own huge pop success at Motown.
In the early '60s, Wilson maintained his pop stardom with regular hit singles that often used horn arrangements and female choruses that have dated somewhat badly, especially in comparison with the more creative work by peers such as Charles and Brown from this era.

From operatic Middle Eastern-tinged pop and spandex-covered standards, this soon-to-be-infamous weekend of music softly strums to its conclusion with the always-earnest folk rock of Jackson Browne.
