		The Battle of Arnhem was an airborne operation by the Allies, between the 17th and 26th of September 1944 during the Second World War, to secure a bridgehead over the Rhine, thereby opening the way for a thrust towards the Ruhr and a possible early end to the war.
		The Battle of Britain had been intended as a preliminary to the German invasion plan Operation Sea Lion, which Hitler indefinitely postponed on the 17th of September and abandoned on the 10th of October, choosing instead to invade the USSR, and the bombing raids were switched to civilian targets.
		The Battle of Imphal was an Allied operation in 1944 during the Second World War to hold Japanese forces back from an important road junction in the Manipur district of north-east India, 600 km north-west of Calcutta.

	Operation Anvil/Dragoon
		Operation Anvil was planned as a supporting action for Operation Overlord, the Allied attack on Normandy.
		Operation Anvil fell both geographically and chronologically between two much larger Allied efforts in northern France and Italy, so both its conduct and its contributions have largely been ignored.
		Operation Torch, the Anglo-American landings against French North Africa in November 1942, was followed by Husky, the assault against Sicily in early July 1943, and the invasion of southern Italy in September.

	Operation Allied Force
		Operation plan OPLAN 10601 "Allied Force" covered altogether five phases, which went from the transfer over a possible application outside of and within the air space of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia up to redeployment.
		Additional operations outside of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia were provided for observation and for the air defense of the air space of NATO nations and Bosnia-Herzegovina as well as to the protection of SFOR.
		The phased concept of operations of Operation Allied Force did not apply principles of military operations such as surprise and the use of overwhelming force, and this cost time, effort and potentially additional casualties, the net result being that the campaign was undoubtedly prolonged.

	The ANVIL Decision
		First, it is important to remember that, though the decision to undertake the southern France venture-the ANVIL operation-was made by the Americans and the British, it was definitely influenced by their Soviet ally.
		The debate over the southern France operation in the summer of 1944 may be viewed as the last gasp of the peripheral strategy advocated by Churchill and his staff from the beginning of the European struggle.
		One, that the operation, designed, as it were, to buttress the "big blow" strategy of the Americans, must share the general round of criticism that has been directed against that strategy.

		Someone from Group Operations called to tell us to get a flight of four P-51's in the air at once and fly to a field called Winfarthing-Fersfield located about 15 miles southwest of Norwich, and about 60 miles east of Kings Cliffe.
		He began by saying that this mission was, next to the invasion of Normandy itself, the highest classified mission of the war.
		In fact it was 17 years after the war before the facts of this mission, called Project "Anvil" were made public.

		Decision as to the Plan to be executed, and my Operation Plan, will be promulgated at a later date.
		Some portions of some of these plans are available elsewhere, such as in the US Army official volumes, but this is a splendid compilation of so many, and such complete, planning documents.
		It might have been improved by a bit more commentary from Ross—for example, by how much did given operations diverge from the original planning (the "Victory Plan" would be a classic case), and what lessons did planners learn for future operationss?—but that is apparently beyond Ross' intended scope.

		Within just a few days, "Operation Vermin" led to the removal of 8,175 "politically unreliable" individuals from their border homes to the East German hinterland.
