The Battle of Arnhem was an airborne operation by the Allies, between the 17th and 26th of September 1944 during the Second World War, to secure a bridgehead over the Rhine, thereby opening the way for a thrust towards the Ruhr and a possible early end to the war.
The Battle of Britain had been intended as a preliminary to the German invasion plan Operation Sea Lion, which Hitler indefinitely postponed on the 17th of September and abandoned on the 10th of October, choosing instead to invade the USSR, and the bombing raids were switched to civilian targets.
The Battle of Imphal was an Allied operation in 1944 during the Second World War to hold Japanese forces back from an important road junction in the Manipur district of north-east India, 600 km north-west of Calcutta.

 Operation Anvil/Dragoon
Operation Anvil was planned as a supporting action for Operation Overlord, the Allied attack on Normandy.
Operation Anvil fell both geographically and chronologically between two much larger Allied efforts in northern France and Italy, so both its conduct and its contributions have largely been ignored.
Operation Torch, the Anglo-American landings against French North Africa in November 1942, was followed by Husky, the assault against Sicily in early July 1943, and the invasion of southern Italy in September.

 Operation Allied Force
Operation plan OPLAN 10601 "Allied Force" covered altogether five phases, which went from the transfer over a possible application outside of and within the air space of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia up to redeployment.
Additional operations outside of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia were provided for observation and for the air defense of the air space of NATO nations and Bosnia-Herzegovina as well as to the protection of SFOR.
The phased concept of operations of Operation Allied Force did not apply principles of military operations such as surprise and the use of overwhelming force, and this cost time, effort and potentially additional casualties, the net result being that the campaign was undoubtedly prolonged.

 The ANVIL Decision
First, it is important to remember that, though the decision to undertake the southern France venture-the ANVIL operation-was made by the Americans and the British, it was definitely influenced by their Soviet ally.
The debate over the southern France operation in the summer of 1944 may be viewed as the last gasp of the peripheral strategy advocated by Churchill and his staff from the beginning of the European struggle.
One, that the operation, designed, as it were, to buttress the "big blow" strategy of the Americans, must share the general round of criticism that has been directed against that strategy.

Someone from Group Operations called to tell us to get a flight of four P-51's in the air at once and fly to a field called Winfarthing-Fersfield located about 15 miles southwest of Norwich, and about 60 miles east of Kings Cliffe.
He began by saying that this mission was, next to the invasion of Normandy itself, the highest classified mission of the war.
In fact it was 17 years after the war before the facts of this mission, called Project "Anvil" were made public.

The third limited attack, Operation ENCORE, was the result of a change in Allied operational strategy that eliminated the heavily fortified city of Bologna as a spring objective and, instead, focused on securing exits from the northern Apennines directly into the Po Valley itself.

Poor tactics and faulty torpedoes were overcome with resourcefulness and tenacity, and by the war's end, the Japanese economy had been crippled and their military and industrial capability destroyed through the loss of over 270 warships and 5 million tons of shipping to attacks by U.S. submarines.
Their inherent stealth provided the means for nearly unrestricted intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations in support of both fleet operations and national objectives.

This new combined Operations Organization was charged not only with the organization and training of "Commando" Striking Forces for raids on German-held Europe, but also with the joint planing of amphibious operations.
The general idea was that it would not be possible to undertake land operations on a large scale in Europe until the Germans showed signs of cracking, and then the governing factor in the size of the forces to be maintained would be transportation and maintenance.".
Development of subsequent phases of the operation would depend on the seizure of sufficient aerodromes and the acquisition of the major ports of Le Havre, Rouen, and Cherbourg, which were to be made operative at the earliest practicable date.

On August 15, while the tank battle was raging in the north, Allied troops landed in Operation Anvil (also code-named Dragoon) between Cannes and Toulon.
Anvil had been a cause of tension within the Alliance because Churchill had preferred to devote the energy and resources to additional operations in the Mediterranean.
Eisenhower insisted, however, that Anvil was important to the success of Overlord because it would pin down German forces in southern France and provide an additional port through which supplies could pass.

"Operation Overlord", the amphibious landings in Normandy that would be forever known as "D?Day," was the most complex and risky undertaking in the history of warfare.
The object of "Operation Zeppelin" was to pin German troops in the Balkans so that they would be weaker in France in anticipation of the Normandy landings.
"Operation Zeppelin" seems to have been a success, keeping the Germans just sufficiently anxious about their situation in the Balkans to prevent the transfer of one or two mobile divisions to France.

About 2,000 of the 12,000 American troops stationed in Afghanistan are involved in the action, dubbed “Operation Avalanche,” to eliminate the Taliban, al-Qaeda, and other armed Islamist groups, and to capture their leaders.
The American soldiers are positioned on the Afghan side of the border in what is termed a “hammer and anvil” operation: about 70,000 Pakistani troops are acting as the hammer to drive the Islamists across the border into the waiting American anvil.
Concurrent with military operations, efforts are also being made to split the Islamist resistance by offering certain leaders a roll in the Afghan political process if they cease their attacks.
