Light Valve Theory of Operation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
A low intensity image is scanned onto the rear side of the light valve; this causes the orientation of the polarization of the reflected image on the front side of the light valve to correspondingly rotate between 0 and 90 degrees.
The image on the front of the light valve is formed by a corresponding raster scanned image on the rear side of the light valve.
The arc lamp used in standard projectors tends to flicker, reduces its output with age, and is not a true point of light source.

The manner in which the arc light source 14 is mounted within the reflector 12 is not part of the invention, and it may be mounted in any suitable manner, such as the manner used for securing arc light source in presently used vehicle arc light source headlamps.
Light from the arc light source 14 is reflected by the reflecting surface 16 and directed through the prismatic lens 18 to form the low beam pattern.
Horizontally, the size of the beam projected by lens 26 is determined by the ratio of the width of the arc discharge between the electrodes of the arc light source 14 to the focal length of the lens 18.

 Operation Arc Light
Operation Arc Light was the code name given to the use of B-52 strategic bombers in Southeast Asia.
For its Arc Light role in Vietnam, the B-52D models were given the "Big Belly" mod to carry up to 108 Mk 82 (500-pound) bombs internally and on underwing pylons.
Arc Light missions were flown over the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos and selectively in the southern part of North Vietnam.

The light carried by the optical conductors is confined or condensed to the relatively small dimensions of the conductors themselves and is adaptable for use in various related space restrictive applications in automobiles and aircraft or other vehicles concerned with aerodynamic styling and efficiency.
The light collected by the solid optical coupler devices 18, 20 travels through the coupler devices by a total internal reflection mode and is transmitted from their output ends 18A, 20A into the input ends 22A, 24A of the respective light distributing conductors 22, 24.
The light distributing conductors 22, 24 conduct and guide the light to spaced preselected lighting positions, such as right and left positions on the front of an automobile, at which are located the light projecting arrangements 26, 28.

Operation Arc Light - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Operation Arc Light was the 1965 deployment of B-52 heavy bombers to bases in Guam.
By extension, arc light (or arclight) became the popular term for B-52 Stratofortress bomber missions flown during the Vietnam War in support of ground troops.
The first use of these heavy bombers in Southeast Asia occurred on 18 June 1965.

 Brush's Arc Lamp
During operation, the carbon electrodes are consumed at their tips, resulting in a widening of the gap between them.
The upward movement of the upper carbon electrode establishes a gap and the arc of the lamp is "struck".
As the lamp operates and the arc gap widens, the current flow through the electrodes is reduced.

1939 - Evolution of Arc Broadside - SMPE
The advantages of arc lighting became increasing pronounced as cinematographers drew away from the earliest flat lightings and began to experiment with the possibilities of creating effects of contour and separation of planes by contrasts in lighting.
In others, a rigid studio policy dictated the lighting: in some such cases all the vapor lights might be used overhead, and all arcs on the floor; in others, vapor lights exclusively on the floor, and arcs overhead.
Previously, because of the heat radiated from the arc, such diffusers had necessarily to be made of relatively narrow strips of glass, mounted in a frame that, for better ventilation, was simply hung rather loosely over the front of the lamp.

 Charles Francis Brush
The arc light preceded Edison's incandescent light bulb in commercial use and was suited to applications where a bright light was needed, such as street lights and lighting in commercial and public buildings.
Extended operation of the lamp requires the maintenance of a specific gap between the electrodes, which can be effected by moving the electrodes during operation with a regulating device.
There were other arc lamps before Brush's that utilized electromagnets as part of a regulation system but it was the combination of the electromagnet with the ring clutch that made Brush's design superior in regulating the arc.
