In addition to the nearly 1,900 CF troops committed to the ISAF mission in Kabul, Canada is also providing Major-General Andrew Leslie as the Deputy Commander, ISAF, and most of the Kabul Multinational Brigade (KMNB) HQ staff.
Canada is now the largest single contributor of troops to the ISAF mission.
Canada's current commitment to Operation ATHENA is for two, six-month rotations of about 1,900 CF personnel, lasting until August 2004.

OTTAWA - Canada is reaffirming its strong diplomatic, development and defence commitment to Afghanistan by extending its military presence and deploying a Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT).
Canada will also deploy a Canadian-led PRT to Kandahar, in southern Afghanistan, for a period of about 18 months beginning in August 2005.
As such, Canada will extend the mandate of its reconnaissance squadron already in Kabul until late this year with the fifth deployment to Operation ATHENA later this summer.

Sperwer is qualified to operate in harsh weather conditions, including temperature, wind, rain, icing etc. Sperwer B is also capable to operate at higher elevations of up to 18,000 feet.
Canada procured SPERWER TUAVs in 2003 to meet requirements for Operation ATHENA, Canada's contribution to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan.

In a subdued ceremony Wednesday at Camp Julien in Kabul, Canadian Forces operations were signed over by Col. Walter Semianiw, who for the past six months has commanded Operation Athena, Canada's contribution to the NATO force in Afghanistan.
One of the main tasks of the next rotation of soldiers moving into Kabul, Roto 4, will be tearing down Camp Julien and moving most of its equipment south.
Kabul today is a very different place from when Camp Julien was opened two years ago, said Canada's ambassador in Afghanistan, Chris Alexander, who oversaw the handover ceremony.

The CF returned to the effort to stabilize and reconstruct Afghanistan in August 2003 under Operation ATHENA, the deployment of a large contingent in Kabul to serve with the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).
Of note, from February to August 2004, then Lieutenant-General Rick Hillier of Canada commanded ISAF, which comprised at that point some 6,500 troops from 35 countries.
Over five successive six-month rotations since August 2003, Canadian soldiers deployed on Operation ATHENA routinely conducted foot patrols and surveillance missions in the ISAF area of responsibility and co-operated with other ISAF contingents in a variety of missions and projects.

Sgt Richard told Maj Marshall, who presented the quilts on behalf of the Victoria Quilters’ Guild, that when his soldiers return to Canada, they would leave the quilts behind for the troops who follow in their footsteps.
