Operation Barras - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Operation Barras was the name of a hostage rescue by the Special Air Service and the Parachute Regiment in Sierra Leone on 10 September 2000.
Before the operation began Kallay had threatened to kill the hostages on the 9th.

The operation was hailed as a great success and was to change the way the public viewed the regiment.
The operation was a success and many rebel leaders were captured; not long after, the West Side Boys had all but been defeated.
Operation Trent employed half the Regiment in a successful attack on an $85,000,000 opium storage plant in Helmand province, which doubled as an Al-Qaeda local command center.

Officially called Operation Barras, but known to the men on the ground as Operation Certain Death, it was a joint operation between the Paras, the SBS, the Navy and the RAF, but spearheaded by the SAS.
Operation Barras, the code name for the mission to rescue the British hostages, involved a combined force of 100 Paras, 25 members of the Special Boat Squadron, helicopters from the Navy and RAF and, spearheading the operation, a 50-strong squadron of the SAS.
Including images from Operation Barras itself - the training and the assault - from Sierra Leone during and after the civil war, and from the rebel bases of the West Side Boys as they are today.

As one SAS veteran put it, 'this was not a clinical, fl balaclava, Princes' Gate-type operation: it was a very grubby, green operation with lots of potential for things to go wrong'...
The SAS and elements of the Parachute Regiment were rushed to West Africa and a naval squadron assembled offshore.
The stage was set for the biggest British military operation on the continent for a generation - and their most daring rescue mission ever.

Andrew Lownie Literary Agency :: Operation Certain Death, 2004
This is the untold, epic story of the single most daring Special Forces operation since World War Two; the rescue by the SAS of British soldiers who were being held captive by drug-crazed rebel group The West Side Boys in the Sierra Leone jungle.
Officially called Operation Barras, but known to the men on the ground as Operation Certain Death, 200 crack forces were sent in to rescue 11 British hostages, who faced execution and worse at the hands of the rebels.
This was a joint operation between the Paras, the SBS, the Navy and the RAF, but spearheaded by the SAS.

PARAMETERS, US Army War College Quarterly - Winter 2001-02
In fact, the very reason for Operation Barras was that 16 days earlier, the "Boys" had seized a patrol from the British Royal Irish Regiment, deployed on military training duties.
As an observer of the Barras operation noted, "You cannot resolve a situation like this with a laser-guided bomb from 30,000 feet." Soldiers in peacekeeping operations, which are the most likely situations for Western militaries to come into contact with child soldiers, may be the most ill-equipped of all to respond.
A flaw in Operation Barras was that there was limited follow-through, and a core group of leaders escaped, possibly to regroup.

The operation has provoked a small clutch of books aiming to recount the operation for the McNab non-fiction market, which caters to the civilian's obsession with military process.
Barras was launched against a faction of a militia itself only marginally relevant to ending the civil war.
That was won by the knowledge of British political commitment, manifested in aid, direction of operations, coordination of UK, UN and Sierra Leonean efforts, reconstruction of the state, and an over-the-horizon force ready to intervene to ensure Sierra Leone didn't slip back into chaos.

Operation Barras was a two-pronged attack, with a company from 1 Para abseiling from Chinook helicopters on to a landing site close to the West Side Boys' jungle hideout.
The fighting continued for another two or three hours because one of the other tasks of Operation Barras was to recover the three Land Rovers, one of them armed with a 50mm Browning heavy machinegun, which had been taken by the West Side Boys when they seized the 11 British soldiers.
The rescue operation was a success, but it was forced on the Government because of what appears to have been a reckless mission into the Occra Hills by The Royal Irish Regiment patrol.
